a threat to barf on somebody shouldn't cause too much alarm in Washington, D.C.!
I am reminded of a long-ago news story. I swear I really read this. During the Vietnam war, some antiwar young person wrote on the outside of the envelope of a letter (perhaps a protest letter to the White House, but I don't remember for sure) "[president's name]'s war makes America puke!" He was hauled in and questioned by the Secret Service. Asked why, a spokesman explained "If enough people puked on the President, it would kill him."

So I don't know what you originally said, Jon, but you may still not be out of the woods!

Something akin to summary execution I think.

I guess some people will accept a job for what they feel they are worth..Free is hard to pay bills with and one can't get any food even at Mickey d's for that price...Self promotion we all have done tons of that with out of pocket $$$$...But if someone totally advirtises for a band to work for zip Sounds like some club owners that I met along the way..."I'll take care of you guys when I make it" "The checks in the mail" An I wont't--er well we all have heard em all...Right Doug?

This reminds me of a certain Club back in the early '80s... when there were many clubs with live music in every city and town in the area. This joint held a jamboree every Sunday afternoon, and bands would play there for free. If you wanted to play at this club on a Friday or Saturday night, you Had to play at their free Sunday jamboree first. Supposedly the owner wanted to hear your band before he booked you. Of course, his jamboree was packed with people every Sunday, no admission charge, and he made a pile of money at the bar. I never did play there! ;-)

I get the same vibe from "open mic's" and the clubs that run them. These kinds of situations take advantage of musicians and their passion for music, in my opinion. Yes, it's a good place for amateurs to get some experience and to meet other players, but it's also a situation of club management profiting on free music.

Back in the daze of house bands and 7 nights a week, a lot of clubs would host Sunday jamborees once a month or so. If "your club" hosted a jamboree, other bands would come play there... and it was expected that You would return the favor by playing at Their jamboree the following week, etc. I was playing free jamborees about three Sundays a month, just returning favors. In the end it was the club owners who made the money. I got really burnt out with it, and I haven't played a freebie in 25 years. ;-) 8)

For free jams, I guess it depends on the size of the crowd. Around here, jams are on week nights, or weekend afternoons. The jammers are about the only ones there, plus the occasional girlfriend or spouse. The club owner is not making much, and the jammers are getting a place to jam and party. Not a bad deal. If there was a large audience buying drinks, I'd begin to feel different. I use to play some acoustic jams - I'd bring a reso. Lately I've been invited to play steel at some electric jams, but it ain't worth it. Everybody else just brings an axe. But I would have to bring a heavy amp, pedal steel, seat, volume pedal, one or two stomps - all to play a couple of songs. No thanks.

Doug,I think I know the club you mentioned about the every Sunday Jam...I fell for it once maybe twice But then I said why? I was working 8 days a week as it was...Had some fun tho when I knew the right guys were playing, that was always a pleasure to show up and I guess we shared a lot of those stages....I believe that Club owners name was AL something or other..Bernardston I believe the Hollywood club..If not I'm sure that was one everyones list..

A few years back, a guy calls me from the Azalea Festival in Wilmington, N. C. "We hear your band is very good and we'd like you to play at the festival."
"But I must tell you, we don't pay anything because
we feel that the exposure you get is good for your
business. Also you must send in an audition video,
because we have gotten stuck with some bad bands in the past."

I told him he had all the information right there to figure out his problem, and I would leave it up to him.

Seems I remember getting calls from event promoters for audition and promo material..I always sent promo stuff but my answer as far as audition.."were working 6-7 nights a week heres where, come out some night"... :) In any case a MUSICIAN making a living with his trade after equiptment investment and develping his talents thru hard work can't afford to be working for FREE..Especially when the club or event is making $$$$.If someone is just starting out, needs recognition and theres a shot at good promotion and publicity then I would say we have all done what needed to be done.

Craiglists should pull the ad as deceptive,
I see a lot of value in Craigslist. One of the valuable things about CL is that when you see an ad or thread you think is not worthy of the community, you can flag it... and it will be deleted. Community rule. So, I saw it, and flagged it. no great hand wringing, action...

Don't think it is right? flag it. It is amazing how cool CL folks are... most ads get through, some get flagged, no mom needed to mod it. it mods itself.

try it... it is in the right corner of the page.

Summeryfun Music:
a two hour set starting off:
"In the Summertime, when all the trees and leaves are green
and the redbird sings, I'll be blue,
'cause you don't want my love."
[then, by the group that sang "Going to the Country"]
"In the Summer time, la da ti ti ti..."
"Summertime, and the livin is...."

etc.

I've gigged in NYC and gotten some offers like this.

Summery/Fun this :!: ya SOB.

I hate this cheap crap.
In the financial district no less,
Where do they make the BIG BUCKS in Manhattan,
The Financial District.

Richest place in NYC.

This sucks big time
and I hope they did get a band
that WISHED they were the Butt Hole Surfers,
but couldn't play that well.

Personals on CL yep scaaarrryy. freebie requests, I am sooo used to it on CL, mY berklee Alumni listings, etc. etc. People, think that musicians should do it (perform not do IT lol) for the love of their craft, for exposure, etc. Exposure gigs usually don't get you anything no matter how good you are. Marketing is another story but, a gig for exposure is useless these days. We are pros providing a service like any craftsmen, plumber, etc. especially if someone is making money of our services. i never say I PLAY music. i am a performing musician (even musician can be a a bad word) or an entertainer. If you're PLAYING you msut be having fun so why get paid for it?

Music pros have to have self respect in all their dealings. Unless it's a worthy charity and that's selective for me. Then I will have th self respect to help the charity, etc. by donating my time (TAX deduction not with standing).

You have no idea how many times this happens or how many bands will do this. To open for named stars however, you had better have every note and bar in place because one screw up and it's all over for your band's future.

Yeah.. BUT,
don't blow off the main attraction in THEIR opinion.

A subtle level of ALMOST there makes you a great opening act for a tour,
too hot, and you make them look bad...
