In 40 years, virtual wars will be fought over "LL Cool J - Rap or Hip-Hop?".
Seriously, when I was a kid I was just happy to hear the Everly Brothers. There was no country music in my life, just the AM radio "Top 40" selections. The Everlys sound was unique and wonderful. I'm glad that they weren't classified as country at the time, because I wouldn't have been exposed to them.

Arguing about definitions seems futile; especially when both "COUNTRY" & "ROCK" have as yet not been entirely defined; in such a way as to allow for in-depth comparisons.
What a waste of time. Really. Who cares? It's music; and either you like it or you don't.
Putting a label or tag on something is demeaning for the humane arts. It's OK for worms and annelids in biology class.
I know we can't help trying to "sort" things out all the time, but it can get out of wack; redundant & rediculous.
