Hey Steve,
Yeah, the Bear Family session notes list "James Beck 'Jim' Gordon" on drums on quite a few Haggard sessions, ending around 69. That really struck me at first until I thought about James Burton and Glen D Hardin and the whole "wrecking crew" scene where they might play a country session in the morning then turn around and record with Elvis or the Beach Boys or whoever that night. I'd guess that Gordon hooked up with Clapton by way of Delaney and Bonnie, and the late 60's club scene in the San Fernando Valley but I don't know. Too bad his story had such a sad/bizarre ending (you could insert a joke about prison songs here I suppose).
As far as Working man Blues it says: Willard Price: bass, Chuck Berghofer: Fender bass. I've heard of Berghofer as an LA session guy but never of Willard Price.
To return to the original topic: any drum that Kenny Malone touches sounds great IMHO!

Hear hear! Listen to the drum patterns on "Rag Mama Rag". Levon is such a great singer no one gives him credit as a *drummer*!robert kramer wrote:For me it's Levon Helm on "King Harvest" with Richard Manual singing lead and especially Levon accenting the guitar solo on the fade. From The Band's second LP.
Very dry, unprocessed drum sounds...
For sheer bombast no one touches Keith Moon.
