Dude, it's about the lesser of two evils quote.
Uh, I knew THAT, Dude (if I may call you "dude"). ;)

I just don't get why it got so overtly politicized. I know Mike's obsessed with politics, but did the original quote have a political background? Was Garcia in fact talking about voting when he said that?

That's what I'm kind of confused about, Dude. Dood! :) I'm not mentally challenged. I get that Mike's referring to the quote. I guess I should have put in some extra "smilies" in there to show that I was being facetious.

...and then there's the idea that there actually IS a lesser of two evils in US politics... ;-) :P

Evil being defined of course as "somebody who doesn't agree with me." :)

We don't know whether Jerry was referring to voting or not, but this is an election year....

When Utah Phillips says it, he makes it clear that voting is EXACTLY what he's talking about. He says something like, "Most people seem not to realize that when they go out and vote for the lesser of two evils, they are still voting for evil." He also makes it plain that his view of evil is not as generous as Mike's. And I believe that Utah is the source of the quote.
And yes, it is totally cool to call me dude, dude. But, "dood?" I always thought that was the past tense of the verb-to do-isn't it?

When I made this post was because I thought the qoute was kind of neat, regardless of who made it,Did,nt mean for it to get political, political threads have a way of disappearing in a hurry[which they should].why not just talk about Jerry, the man and his music,I never was a Dead Head, but loved the blue grass things he did,The old and in the way stuff, with David Grisman[one of my idols]and Vasser,my alltime favorite fiddle player, and the Pizza Tapes with Tony Rice[monster flat top picker].Lets just talk about the music[no matter if you liked him or not]Don't politicize it,or it WILL be gone.DYKBC.

How could anyone really think Garcia was the best steel guitarist ever. These people have obviously never heard Ronnie Wood (the Rolling Stones), Steve Howe (Yes) or Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd). Joking aside, all these people have used steel guitar to achieve exactly the effect they wanted - no musician can do more. I'm proud to count myself among the illustrious ranks of good guitarists who play crap steel:-)

One of my favorite tracks on the Pizza Tapes is at the end (I think?) where you hear Jerry and David compare the tone Tony gets from his Clarence D28 to Clarence White's tone on the same guitar. Pretty cool to hear the opinion from two people who knew and played with both.

There's so much Dead stuff out there that I still can't really get into it, but there's a lot of solo Jerry I like. Anytime I read an interview with him I'm struck by how intelligent he was and how much he genuinely loved and was interested in all types of music. It's inspiring.

I second that, it is a very enjoyable DVD.

Charlie, sorry man - but I can't take it anymore: the man's name was spelled Vassar!

Don't forget to completely curl your right hands middle finger under (and I suggest using a wide rubber band to hold it in place).
Put picks on your thumb, index, ring, fingers.
Then take a shot at the "Teach" tab.

No, it's the nickname of a certain puppet that was a big TV star in the 50s.

Hey kids, what time is it?

I don't know about all that other stuff.
I do have a Dead story, tho:

The one and only time I saw the Dead was in 1968 in a small bar outside of Portland. During a solo, Mr. Garcia broke a string on his Stratocaster (!).
He reached behind him to a supply of Nashville Straights (remember them?) and threw a new one on that strat inside of about 4 measures, tuned up, and finished his solo. Freakin amazing!!

back on topic (sort of)

Post by Paul Arntson »

Since I tugged us off topic I feel obligated to steer us back a little (well, sort of)...
I think I'll start the Jerry Garcia / Esteban /silly plastic hat (yes I meant the HAT at toys r us)/alembic-wolf air guitar thread.

In the meantime, here's a seriously bad pun to guide our discussion:

The one with the beard. The only time I saw the Greatful Dead Jerry was clean shaven, and still playing the red Gibson SG.

I wonder what Estaban would sound like with a good guitar?
