calvin - im a newb to steel too (1 year), but i do have some experience playing guitar and that has helped me with chords and chord theory - here are some places that you can play the chord progs that you are asking for in "silver wings - also let me say this - alot of guys here with alot of experience and knowledge are going out of their way to help us newbies - even if it comes off a little "tough love", the info is fantastic even when they tell us to slow down and "learn what we are learning" you say you dont like theory but even when you are talking about chords such as E Maj7 and F# min you are talking music theory - learning music and music theory just helps us communicate in a common language so the the info is understood more easily and quickly - it all fits together hand in hand

Great job, Calvin. I have been playing for a few years and I still think all steelers sound better than I do. One day it will all fall into place for you as far as chord progressions and such and then look out! Keep up the good work.

Yes that is what I ment.
The 7th is a way to lead you into the next chord
it has a searching sound to it.
I don't know how much theory you know at this stage,
I would say to you that you learn the Circle of Fifths.
Here is interactive site that will help you a great deal. It looks a little strange at first but this will the best thing you will learn.
On the lefthand side you will see all the keys just click on one and the circle will show you all the chords in that key.. It's not to hard to work out .

Calvin, that was a nice first effort. I would think it would take a lot of guts to put up a video as essentially your first "public appearance". Many gigging players are scared to death to post videos. And notice how painless it was? Nobody is slamming it - just posting tips and offering suggestions. That's a wonderful benefit!

Hopefully this is a start to you getting out and playing live. You took a HUGE first step, and I congratulate you.

Calvin,I found it.I'm at work and couldn't get back on the computer until now. That's pretty smooth.I can understand your being nervous because it happens to me regularly. It's just a lack of confidence that you will overcome with time.I can play my steel with ease until I know I'm being watched. It's funny because it doesn't bother me at all to sing, but I don't care about singing.I want to play the steel! As b0b says:"everybody sings".

Thanks for your kind words guy's! That clip is from a 30 min dvd of the "Soundboard" TV show that I did in 1983. If you go to my website, www.jimeatonmusic.com, there is a link to the Guitararts website where you can see the great players that I have the honor to be included with on the Soundboard series. You can purchase the full 30min show there also.

you and i have had our diferances so that means a lot coming from you,
let me explain a little more about my nerves.
its a condition that seems to be passed down from my mothers side
of the family and only seems to effect the males and it skips some
and effects others, my 2 brothers never had it, yet it almost kept my son out of the Navy

ANDY i am sending you an e-mail

Calvin,
I also sent you a couple of e-mails ~ one with a chord chart in it for an attached MP3.
Let me know if you received them seeing as you had trouble receiving Larry Strawn's e-mail.
They told me I was gullible ~ and I believed them.

Does anyone recall the website where you could go and put in the number of string you have, along with your copendent and it would show you where chords were and notes within that chord?

I had it saved but when my hard drive went, it went goodbye.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim M,

I looked at both of those and they look like they will do the job.

The one I was referring to I believe showed the neck of a steel guitar w/strings. But, at my age I can't be too sure of anything. Except, Medicare is less than six months away. Yuck!!

Thanks,
Jim E.

Calvin, you're obviously heading in the right direction. Keep up the good work !
I should also add, people who tackle this beast as a first instrument have my respect. You're doing great.

Nice work fellas

I cant imagine picking up E9 pedal steel as my first instrument, I played trumpet and guitar for 20+ years, since I was 3 or so, was able to pick up dobro, mando and banjos pretty easy, but the Pedal steel has been the biggest challenge musically I have encountered.
