ok, without actually hearing the verse or chorus I agree it's Perdidio. While I can't tell who it is I will guess it is NOT Curley Chalker. The players free form and fluidity is good but not up to the CC level of jazz. I am going to GUESS Tom Morrell.
I really need to listen more and pracyice more C neck.

i still can't spel

With out having relistened to the record from which this comes, I'm gonna say Morrell.

Guessing it is Perdido from the "Sextet Sessions" LP with both Maurice and Tom Morrell. Johnny Case on piano I think?

Haven't drug it out to compare, but if I recall it has long extended solos like this. I wouldn't care to guess whether it is Tom or Maurice.

Its Perdido. I haven't dug out this LP to listen in a few years. The only way I could tell if it's Morrell or Anderson soloing is to follow the liner notes which provide the order of solos. Then by listening closely Maurice had a cleaner right hand attack to my ears. An awesome jazz album with extended solos. Only four tunes on the whole thing.

I'm voting for Tom.

In the past David Wright has shared some interesting stuff with me about the day this session was cut and should chime in here.

The winner will indeed be announced shortly. All I can say right now is that you guys have gotten a lot better since your last feeble attempt to name the 1st MYSTERY STEELER, when everyone went down the tubes together and not a single person got it right. At least this time someone got the right answer. Stay tuned...!

OK, here we go!!!

First of all, the answer to the extra credit question: The name of the song, was correctly identified by several people. The song is indeed PERDIDO!

Now for the MYSTERY STEELER #2 spinning nonstop jazz lines over these changes (without getting at all Perdido, I might add):

Image
Tom Morrell!

The recording comes from the Sextet Sessions LP recorded by Reece Anderson and Tommy Morrell in the 1960's.

Thanks for participating in our little contest; y'all did pretty good this time! See ya next time!

Jimbeaux :D

High Fives here! :D

This was a lot of fun, especially with the extra challenge of guessing the song.

Ready for another, Jim.
