I thought I would start a separate thread about the experiences of putting together one's own recording for this project. (See above.)

Is this correct bob ?

Mike Perlowin wrote: This recording of my classical music trio: http://www.etsga.org/mikeperlowin_Bourree.mp3 was recorded live in concert, obviously in one take with no overdubs. This recording will appear on the Forum members CD. (I didn't compose the original tune, but I did write this arraignment.)
So the goalposts have changed ?
That must mean that we can submit anything that's "Trad" or out of copyright, as long as it's our own arrangement !!

I understood that it HAD to be an original composition, not only original, but composed by the player..

Is this a big deal? I'm willing to make an exception for original arrangements of unfamiliar music that's over 100 years old.

I understand that your submission is still in the mail, Basil. If you wish to change it, email me.

The intent is to showcase steel guitar talent on original material. I asked Mike to improvise something new. He said that his recording equipment was no longer functioning, but he had a live recording of his trio playing one of his arrangements. Okay, if that's all you have... :\

There's plenty of space left on the disk. The only thing that would ruin the novel listening experience is a familiar tune.

B0b, once the exception is made the playing field is no longer level..

OK so it's your prerogative to change the conditions as you see fit, but I would have been better for YOU to have said that rather than us being told elsewhere by someone else.

Surely if the length of time it took to write an arrangement is the yardstick, then the LEAST proficient of us who took the longest to work it out and write it would qualify ?

How long do you think it took me to score write out the arrangement of this for the RTE concert orchestra ?

A classical piece written in 1903 by Hugo Emil AlfvΓ©n

I wouldn't have considered submitting this under the original rules..
Can I now ?

I originally intended to submit a 16th Century lute piece, which I had recorded 20 years previously on the lute, but this time transcribed for lap steel. I rejected the idea because I hadn't written the song myself, it being well-known. I agree with Basil that we shouldn't change the rules.

Yes, I'll include it.

FWIW, I hate rules. All I wrote on the submission form was "The song should be an original steel guitar instrumental." To date the only thing I rejected was a familiar Christmas carol, familiarity being the deal-breaker. Some songs aren't in strict adherence to what I think "should be" allowed, but I included them because the player felt that they showcase his originality and talent.

This CD isn't a contest - it's an exercise in sharing our music. There's no "playing field" or "goal posts" because it's not a competition.

I stressed originality for 2 reasons: 1) to avoid legal hassles and 2) to avoid getting 10 competing recordings of Londonderry Aire or Danny Boy. Obviously steel guitar arrangements of obscure classical music fit within the intent of that one sentence, if they are not within the "letter of the law".

Something about mountains and molehills, tempests and teapots... Submit what you you want, Basil.

The two controversial "classical" tunes arrived today:

#43 - Basil Henriques - "Swedish Rhapsody"
#44 - Mike Perlowin - "BourrΓ©e"

Basil, the submission form says that liner notes would be emailed, but I haven't received them yet.

I've been wanting to get in on this project myself ... it sounds like a really fun thing and I've been having a great time noodling around and trying to come up with something ...

... my problem is that everything I noodle around with starts out as sounding original and then ends up sounding like a song (or combination of songs) that have already been composed or played ... it's like they end up sounding "too familiar".

It's funny ... years ago, before I quit playing back in 2000, I could pull something original or different out of thin air at the drop of a hat ... now that I'm back into playing again, I'm suddenly struggling to come up with something that doesn't sound like a spin-off or variation of existing songs.

There is a tune that keeps bouncing around in my head and has a sort of Celtic feel to it and I don't recognize it, but I honestly don't know if it's something really coming from me or if it may be some tune that I might have heard long ago somewhere. If I can determine that it's original, or at least some tune obscure enough to sound original, I do know what I'd call it ... "Excalibur Steel" ... that's the name that pops into my head every time I think of the tune. :)

That's been the bugbear of composers throughout the ages. There can't be many combinations of notes left that someone hasn't already used. :(

Music is infinite. There's no danger of running out of unique melodies. None at all. Remove the limitations you impose on your your own musical thinking. There are no limits in music.

b0b wrote:No deadline. When I get enough material to make the CD, I'll make it. Probably about 50 or 60 songs, I figure. From then on (assuming success), new submissions will go in the queue for Volume 2.

Limited to one song per member, to keep anyone from hogging tracks.

You going with 50 or 60?

So we're up to 47? Just three more! C'mon, guys! Can't wait to hear this thing!
I give music lessons on several different instruments in Cambridge, NY (between Bennington, VT and Albany, NY). But my true love is pedal steel. I've been obsessed with steel since 1972; don't know anything I'd rather talk about... www.barryhyman.com
