These are R+B/pop musicians, they are very good at what they do but they can't execute the simplicity and open feel of Country Music. Many musicians of other genres think Country is easy , it's not, it's easy to play bad and hard to play well.
I was appauled by the Adam guy, I personally thought Simon was easy on him, even though he said it was horrific,it's Country music night, I think he totally disrespected Johnny Cash with that howling pathetic version of a song. He may not get the boot this week or even next week, but he will not win this thing and he will not have a continued carreer , he is to narrow and only appeals to a small percentage, the rest will think he is too wierd, of which he is.

She got by on her looks.
Michael's version of "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" was a disaster - I've heard drunks at college parties do a better job on that song.
After the bizarre "Ring of Fire" the previous week, Adam's version of Smokey's "Tracks Of My Tears" was tastefully done, and the sparse arrangement/instrumentation was great. Plus he had the matinee idol/Elvis look sort of thing going, instead of the updated 21st century version of the Rod Stewart haircut, I'm sure that picked up votes with the ladies.

I was glad to see Michael go - but shocked that Matt was at the bottom. Matt sings and plays from his heart, which I love!!
I give Adam an A++ for his rendition of Tracks of my Tears. His updated look resembled Elvis with a twist of KD Lang.
I agree with Theresa's comments about Megan - not good at all. However, I do like the tone of her voice and her uniqueness. And, even though I wouldn't call it dancing, I do believe she's moving to the beat of a little penguin-drummer-boy she keeps hidden behind her tattoo.
Seriously, I think she's adorable and has a lot of potential - but of course, won't be our next American Idol.
The plot thickens . . .

OOPS, my bad, Mark. I'm not proud of the fact that I broke the proper-noun exception rule. I'll have to find a way to make it up to k.d.Mark Eaton wrote:Except, remember no Caps for k.d. lang, a la e.e. cummingsHis updated look resembled Elvis with a twist of KD Lang.

I actually liked the Ring of Fire number as did my wife.
that woman who did the Daddy was a rolling stone number last week is to me the best of the bunch. Actually, I think in general it is a pretty poor crop this year.
But the best performance of the week for me wasn't AI at all.
I saw "Standing the in the Shadow of Motown" about the unrecognized backing band, the Funk Brothers, that played on all the motown hits: Joan Osborn's version of What becomes of the Broken Hearted is an example of what sets a great artist apart from most of the talent on a show like American Idol. Her performance is unbelievable.

Bill, "Standing In The Shadows of Motown" is a really good film, I thoroughly enjoyed it and bought the soundtrack CD right after I saw the movie.
My whole thing on American Idol is "if one of these singers, from all of the years the show has aired, came to my town, would I pay money (even if the tickets were pretty cheap) to see them?"
I would have a difficult time answering "yes."
Joan Osborne's take on "What's Become of the Broken Hearted" is outstanding, but comparing the AI wannabes to Joan is really being tough on them. Joan Osborne is a world class singer.
I look at AI as sort of being a TV game show, with a different premise and theme than something like Jeopardy. I know a lot of people don't look at it that way, and will even pay money to see the top 10 survivors perform on tour this summer.
The bizarre take by Adam On "Ring of Fire" was at least interesting for a one-time listen, but I don't think I'll be downloading it any time soon to listen to on the iPod while working out at the gym.

Bill, the type of music you and I enjoy (and I recall that among other genres, you are a huge jazz guy) doesn't, for the most part, receive big-time recognition.
The best thing that comes out out of AI, in my opinion, is that people in this country still care a lot about the idea of music, and there is hope that one can "convert" a few of them now and then to the good stuff.
We have the free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco each October, sponsored by the generosity of billionaire financier Warren Hellman. And a lot of people who show up for the deal in Golden Gate Park, since it is free, are exposed to quality music, in some cases perhaps for the first time, played by some of the world's finest musicians, and I contend if you give a person of some level of intelligence and open-mindedness exposure to the good stuff, it can in fact make them fans thereof.
But you have to at least enjoy music to begin with, so maybe it's a good thing that American Idol is so popular - with all the other distractions in the world these days, at least people still pay attention in a big way to the idea of music.

Although Adam's version of Ring of Fire was not country-ish at all, neither were any of the other songs really.
I was excited for GOO week and it was a big let down.
I do think that if you look at Adam's interperetation of the song you can't disagree he definitely made it his own. And the guy can sing. Maybe not the country that is well recieved on this site, but he can sing. And I think he will win the whole thing.
Carrie Underwood came off of that show, and she is fantastic. I missed that season, but I plan on watching it for her performances to see if she countrified things or not.
I correctly guessed Mike Sarver to get voted off the island and now my wife and I are tied in points for the season. She picked McCorkery.
McKorkery will go next week - maybe.
I though for sure when they had the piano on stage that Matt was gonna have to sing for his life.
