I have two, a sho-bud LDG with triple raise, double lower, 4 on the floor and five knees and also a Carter Double ten with 8x8, both are nice guitars, if I only had the money........

For 25 years I had only one guitar, and that was during the years I made my living with one. Now that I play just for the fun of it I have 4 and a 5th on the way. Go figure.

All this discussion about having more than one steel has got me to thinking though..

I know where a very nice Sierra is here local that I can get RIGHT!! Hmmmmm

It would be convienient to have one to gig with, and one to leave in my music studio.

I have a Zum and a Carter D10 both set up identically ... and my rack and a NV1000. There has been times when I was working a TV show and had to leave everything on the set. Having the extra guitar at home enabled me to rehearse the next up coming programme and also to do other sessions and gigs as well, so I would have been struggling with only one axe. And borrowing a pedal steel guitar around here from someone wasn't really an option -- steel players are about as scarce as rocking horse S*** here, and not too many have got quality gear.

There have been times when I didn't have much work on and thought "why do I need 2 guitars" --- but if I have another beer it usually passes ha !!

I really don't take my playing as serious as I would like but if this is what I would have as my trade yes I would have multiple PSG's and I would not leave it overnight in a club hello! it won't be there in the morning! I don't think I could trade trains in for a fulltime PSG I really dont think I would care for it

Only one and it has made life so much simpler. When I owned more than one, the others just sat in the case and I always migrated to the favorite one whether it was for practice or playing out.

At one point I was up to eight pedal steels.
I left one at the church, one with the band, and kept one set up. That still left five.
After my heart attack last year, I sold off most of my gear. Now I'm down to two pedal steels. A Rains and an Emmons. Both are very nice and I've decided not to sell either so that I have a backup.

Gosh, I feel left out, I only have two steels, a D-10 Emmons and a Williams keyless, a Martin D-40, 63 Gibson SG, Fender Strat and a Fender Jazz Base, five amps etc. The problem is not the instruments, it is where do you put all those cases. My wife said NO MORE, or she's going to rent a storage unit and let me live there with the cases. We've got cases under all the beds, stacked in the bottom of closets etc. Sure would love to have a vintage Sho bud, and a ZB, a PP Emmons and a........Bobbe ole buddy, have you got a ...?

Put me in with Randy Beavers, above. During the Nashville years, and the rest of "making a living" exclusively with steel, just the ole ZB. Now that it's weekends, got 3, the (retired) ZB and two D12 PP's. Like Randy said, go figure.

Info on the steel guitars:

My Zum D-10 (owned by the late Hal Rugg 1982 to 1996, then rebuilt with two new changers and new pedal rack and pedals, and then owned by Henning Kock from 1996 -), A piece of steel guitar history.

and my JCH S-10DB (owned by Lloyd Green 1988-2002, and then owned by Henning Kock from April, 2002 -) A piece of steel guitar history.
This very instrument was played by Mr. Nashville Sound on albums by Ricky Scaggs, Dolly Parton, Lorrie Morgan etc.
Also the Lloyd Green/Tommy White Video, and countless steel shows in the US and Europe.

Triple 8 National all orginal everything works goes back to the earley days.

Double 6 Supro w/ legs

Two Dobro;s nice ones, one new 1937 re-issue
1985 Dobro orginal also

Several Guitars too many to list, fron Tele's Strats, Gibsons, Guild, Martin, Taylor, and the list goes on....Chet Atkins Gibson with the red fret markers..

As many as you can get away with. My strategy is to buy only black guitars. That way when the wife asks, hon, is that a new steel? I just answer na, I,ve had that ol' thing.........................at least three-four hours.

I own 2 steels. A 74 Emmons push/pull and an 86 Emmons SKH Legrande. Both D10s.
I use one for practice and one for gigs. The 86 gets the gig duties.
Steels that I have owned but sold include:
Hughey D10(8 and 5)
MSA classic D10(8 and 4)
Shobud Maverick(3 and 1)Bought this steel to get the Shobud volume pedal. Paid $110 for it including volume pedal. Sold it a few months later without the volume pedal for $450.
