..that's the "Lucky 7"...Bill's theory is that the 3rd string breaks because of stress on the metal where the string makes a 90 degree bend over the changer finger, so the "Lucky 7" is a little bracket of sorts which rides on the finger and that allows him to put the string end in a slot straight out in line , instead of with a 90 degree bend in the string overtop of the finger...

...not to be outdone, of course, by Jon Light's classic 3rd string "Zebco String-o-Matic as seen in this topic...

I have never broke a 3rd string on a job.
(knock on wood)
REASON: I put a new one on every week about Thursday.

Only time it's ever broken at all is when I get a defective one out of the box, which is rare.

For you tightwads, at about 50 cents a string, that's less than $30/year. That certainly beats the surprise on stage and the sliced knuckles.
