It occurs to me that the changer axle sticking out like that can't just be an accident - maybe it's to facilitate taking the changer apart without major disassembly of the steel, like to swap around/change out the fingers for different configurations. . .

Also, some of you might get a kick out of the "Emmons" volume pedal that accompanies the steel. . . like the guitar, very well-built.

Paul, Larry Hamilton here. JR Rose finally found me. Smiley built at least one steel in the 60’s, it was a D-12. As far as I can remember he always played an MSA D-12. I think he had at least one Chuck Wright built guitar when, I guess, Chuck worked at MSA. Wish I could be of more help. Good luck on your quest and please keep us posted. Keep Pickin’, Larry
