I've had a copy of that book for years.
Great starter book.
Someone gave me the book a long time ago but it was misplaced during a move.
Then about 19 years ago another friend gave me a folder with all the pages copied.
It's in my stack of reference books.
I wonder if anyone ever did or will reissue it again?

I'm happy with my 22.5 but I haven't really tried long scale much.

Don Helms did use slants, just not very often. His most famous pieces don't seem to involve any. I find slants fun to do actually, having learned them first on dobro. I still struggle with the reverse slants sometimes though. There seems to be a certain "slant tone", for lack of better description... (yeah, awful :-P ) that you don't tend to get just barring straight across. I think it sounds cool.

That Jerry Byrd slant works better with a bullet bar, but I've done it with my snub-nose SP-2. You can also approximate with a Stephens by bending the middle string with your finger behind the steel.

C. E. Jackson & Erv,
It's the one with the red cover that C. E. Jackson & Erv posted.
I didn't know about the others so now something to add to my "I want one of those" list! Laughing

I have the one with the red cover. Those three books contain much of the same information... the one with the tan cover is 1950s. The red cover is 1960 and it contains the same material plus more. The one with the blue cover is Jerry's Big book, 300+ pages, much of the older material and new material, additional tunings. That one was compiled by Scotty's team.

Hi Doug,
Is there big book still available somewhere?
If not I'll search Amazon.
Thanks,
Andy

I have made quite a few Lap Steels and most follow the designs of National Guitars at 23 inch scale which I like very much and my Guyatones are also 23 inch. But here is a little Gem from Tiesco, its an R1 Model from 1964, 20.5 inch scale, parallel string spacing at 3/8th inch.

Have a look & listen. --- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oyMbwGnZh0

I would like to try a 1964 R1 model.
Excellent job, as usual, James.

I was able to purchase a new copy from Michael at Scotty's music just about 1 year ago:

http://www.scottysmusic.com/byrdbook.htm

There's been some question about the status of the business but the website is still listing these few materials including the Byrd course. Cost a little over $100 with shipping, I simply sent money with Paypal. You might try emailing to ask about it.

I had a watch set on eBay and have seen versions of the course come up for sale maybe 3 times in the past year. Usually no cheaper and sometimes twice as expensive.

Scotty's Music was the only authorized sales outlet for Jerry's big book. But Scotty is gone now, Jerry is gone, and Scotty's Music has shut down, as far as I know. There was some question about the copyright (or lack of copyright) on the book a few years ago. Someone on eBay was copying and selling the book. I told Scotty about it and he didn't seem to know what to do about it. Evidently Jerry had given Scotty permission to compile and sell the big book, but there was no copyright notice on the book. So that might play into any future printings of the book.

Andy,

I got in touch with Michael, Scotty's son a few months ago, and he got me a copy of Jerry Byrd's big book. I think he is selling off what is left.

I went through the website.

It is a shame that these self-published gems are disappearing. Hope you get a copy.

Cheers, Bryan

Thanks Bryan,
Googled it and they seem to still have the material.

http://www.scottysmusic.com/byrdbook.htm

Not sure if the real store is still open, but they have quite a few instructional items on the web site with buy buttons.
