Here is my '06 S-12 Extended E9th 3X5. Love the guitar. Bruce really did a good job for me on this one.

Well I have lashed out and purchased this Zum from a club member and it is MINT and I do mean MINT.
He was a true gentleman who allowed me to pay him in installments. It does not get better that that! A public thankyou as he is a forum member. It is a delight to play despite the daunting nature of the 12 strings. I do tend to play the E9th side of the tuning. (I do play a U10 so its not too bad)I have a lifetime of learning ahead!!! If I can only get one of those Zum t-shirts now!

Hi everyone, I'm bumping this thread again because I'm having problems with the pickup in this guitar. It is producing quite a loud hum. I'm embarrassed to say that I'm not sure if it's a single coil or a humbucker. It sounds like a humbucker when being played, but if that's what it is, then I guess something must be wrong with it, because it's not bucking any hum.
Here's a closeup of the pickup. The friend who sold it to me said that there was no crack on the cover when he shipped it, so I assume FedEx dropped it or something:
Can anyone verify if this is a humbucker? Then the next thing I'd be trying to decide is whether to try and get it fixed, or get a replacement. |

You need to contact Doug Earnest at Stage One, I am sure he will help you out, those are the perfect learning steel guitar. I am about 99% sure it is a single coil pickup and about 50% sure that if it is working at all then the crack is not your problem. If the amp, chords and volume pedal you are using don't hum with other instruments then the next thing to try is moving the amp around to different positions to see if that has any effect, if it doesn't try moving the whole rig to a different room and/or different set of AC outlets would be my next suggestion, then I run out of advice. I had one of these as a practice guitar for a few years and had no problem with hum so whatever your problem is it can be fixed. |

Stephen (and Jay): Currently Stage Ones use a humbucker pickup, as noted on Doug's site:
http://stageonesteelguitars.com/
This I think is an earlier model, before Doug took over (although he could have built it when he was working for Bruce). The reason for saying so are it has the more basic pedals, and the pickup is slightly different in shape from the ones Doug is currently using. However, I suspect they new one will work fine. I agree: contact Doug E. and he will take care of you.
Cheers,

Thanks Jay and Douglas, I will contact Doug at Stage One.
I've tried moving things around, and lots of different outlets, etc. The hum never goes away. Even plugged into a Line6 Pod, it's there. I'm going to hope it won't be hard to just get a new pickup in there. |

Update: Doug E. at StageOne confirms that it's a single coil in my guitar, and says "Those pickups sound great, but were always noisy even under the best of circumstances." I've ordered a replacement humbucker from him. He actually says the humbuckers don't sound as nice as the original single coils, but the buzz on this thing is pretty much unbearable, so hopefully I'll still come out ahead.
Down the road I am looking to add a 4th knee lever. Doug says he doesn't currently have parts on hand to send me, but thinks he will in a couple of months, so I might be asking for more advice from you all in the future. Thanks for your help, everyone. |

Not to be outdone by Bill here is some pics of my new D10 Hybrid which Bruce had ready for me to pick up at the Dallas show a couple of weeks back -- I got to play it all weekend in the Telonics room with John Stannard and Mark Dunn, it was so good I couldn't drag myself away from it hehe..

That is a very perdy guitar Paddy. If you ever get fed up with salivating all over it, I would take it off your hands for a small fee
One of Bruce's very best I would suggest. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Telonics TCA-500, Webb 614-E, |

Thanks Bill, it was that photo of yours which swayed me going with the Red Burl - it looks fantastic and several guys at Dallas thought it was actually a Lacquer guitar and it sounds amazing !!
Ken, even Bruce told me it was a Killer guitar -- I've done a session and a couple of gigs with it since I got home and I must say I can't disagree with Bruce's summation ... you might have a long wait for me to want to let go my grip on it _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9
