Yeah, the Bill Frisell septet stuff is great. I like the "Blues Dream" CD quite a bit (also Bill Frisell's "Nahville" w/ Jerry Douglas is fantastic).
Even better than the Blues Dream CD though was a live performance of the septet that was recorded and played (a few songs, anyway) on the CBC ("Jazz Beat") back in December or January. I desperately wish I could get a copy of that recording. Or at least a copy of the CBC show. If anybody happened to have recorded that particular "Jazz Beat" show...

| Yes, go see Frizz with Greg Leisz as soon and as often as you can! Plenty of roots happening, but also a lot of eclectic stuff... Frisell's latest (featuring a lot of work by Greg) - The Intercontinentals - introduces some world music/middle eastern sounds too... Recommended... |

The new "Intercontinentals" cd is interesting. Leisz offers a great bit of stuff that lays under everything nicely. Sometimes you have to stop and remind yourself to listen for his parts. He can blend with the rest of the band so seamlessly that he seems to disappear, but if his part wasn't there, it would change the sound altogether.
Frisell's Blues Dream and Good Dog, Happy Man really center more around Leisz's playing. Blues Dream may be a challenging listen for some, but his parts on dobro, lap steel and PSG are mindboggling. [This message was edited by Chris Walke on 10 June 2003 at 07:54 AM.] |

That's the great thing about Greg Leisz playing: he is so understated! Some of my favorite parts of his are pure background padding. He always gets a tone that compliments the other instruments in the ensemble, instead of standing apart and getting in your face.
It must be rubbing off on me. A bandleader tried to hire me recently by saying "I'll give you a lot more solos than that band you're with. They don't turn you loose. I'll give you a solo in every song." He doesn't realize that I am playing almost constantly in my band, getting a real workout. It just isn't out front, like in traditional country music.

Greg plays some nice steel on the new 'Thorns' CD. I once saw him play live with Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan.
