Indeed sad news and sadly ironic that both the shuttle commander and pilot were from Texas.
The Israeli shuttle crew member, Air Force Col. Ilan Ramon, participated in the June 7, 1981 raid (9 Israeli Air Force F15s & F16s flying low level over 1100 km to the target basically wingtip to wingtip to give a radar signature that would approximate a commerical airliner) that destroyed (in less than 2 minutes) the Osirak nuclear facility near Baghdad.

| This truly sucks.I had the opportunity to witness the landing of the Columbia at Edwards Air Force Base in 1986.Ironically,it's crew contained the first Arab astronaut. |

| This is a sad day today. I saw the Challenger explode right from my back yard in Florida where I was spending the winter. Jan. 1986 .I saw the capsule separate and hoped they would be saved. Terrible and now this again. A sad day for everyone today....al |

| Back even before the Challenger disaster, I was lucky enough to work on the STS program, and helped build some of the hardware that's now aboard the shuttles...they're amazing, and highly complex vehicles. Flying up into space is a tremendous scientific feat, with tremendous risks, as well. My heart goes out to the families, as well as all now involved in the space program. |

My condolences to the families, Rick Husband was a graduate of Texas Tech University in the spring of 1980, I began my studies there in the Fall of 1980. It is amazing how connected we all are.
This is hard to take, we lost 12 people from my town on Sept 11, 2001, and also another town resident on 9-11-02 when a large branch fell on a ninth grade girl on that windy day in front of the high school.
We must all do everything we can to enjoy life and help one another, since life can be fragile.
God blesss the Columbia crew.

Yes, a really sad day. The radar tracking station where I work down here is part of the DoD tracking network that supports the shuttle on orbit. We tracked them the last time in the early morning hours saturday (Greenwich Mean Time), so it really has hit myself and my crew here.
AStronauts are a breed apart for sure. Over my 23 years in the space business, I have had the pleasure of meeting many of them. Truly they are heroes!

Heard a report this AM that within an hour of the incident, there were "pieces" for sale on eBay! Legit or not, I hope they put those fools away for a while!! Hard to believe .. or maybe not
