If you like jazz with a bit of an edge, then layed over with a very hip sounding steel, you will get the drift of Gary Carter's recordings.

So cool. Definitely not country. But absolutely tuff.

Do a search on MP3.com for Gary Carter.

While you are at it check out Buzz Evans.

Also very edgy and risky jazz steel and guitar playing, played well.. very well!

I know many of you already know these players , but I just listened to them for the first time and, once again, I am all stoked all over again.

Sh(*&...... back to the practice room

Hiya Bill, Buzz has been discussed and mentioned on the forum before, but I don't suppose that many Forumites know that our main man Smiley Roberts used to play steel to the lead guitar of Buzz in a 1960s dance band, some years before Smiley made the move to TENN.

I must admit I'm suprised that more info or discussion on Buzz does not appear, but even his old website was rather skimpy on stories and details on his career.

Buzz Evans is a steel and guitar playing GIANT!! The 2 CDs I released of Buzz on my Vibrato label are some of the BEST steel and guitar playing of BUZZ ever. Leon Rhodes wrote the liner note praising BUZZ on the guitar CD; Paul Franklin wrote the liner note praising BUZZ on the steel CD. These 2 CDs feature Buzz alone as the lead instrument on all songs and they are live in Denver. I have always LOVED Buzz's playing. I can still hear4 his "Pink Panther" with Joe Goldmark saying,"Buzz is the last of the steel guitar hipsters!"

Jason, Wayne,

Whew! I thought Buzz sounded good. That's why I posted it... along with Gary Carter. I mean there is so much the steel has to offer, and these two guys are truly great examples of what can be done, and commercially as well!

I still think they are both monster players.

I had the pleasure of doing some overdubs on this very project for Gary. I have worked closely with Gary over the years on the road and in the studio with Randy Travis and also with Faith Hill. He is a fine steel guitar player and often unrecognised talent. He is very inventive and has a super ear. If you get the chance to hear him live or hear this project don't pass it up.
Hey Gary, I have always thought you were a very "accurate" player. Winking See ya down the road.

I promise this is my last post in a row, Bob.... Smile
I just realized, that if you all want to see old pics of Gary Carter and a few other "forumites" such as Tommy White, Hank Corwin, Robbie Flint and Joe McGuffey. I still need to get a pic of old Steve Hinson on there :-)but... I have pictures of all of them on my website in the "Images" section under "Bands". It was my pleasure to work with all these fine steel guitarists. Check 'em out. Bye for now. http://www.geocities.com/strayhorn7/index.html

A friend of mine just called me and is doing shows in Las Vegas. We played in the same band for years in the 50's. He is still doing it!
He told me about the steel man he worked with at times out there, Buzz Evans. He sent me a cassette. Well, that guy is Really great! He is 63 and Harry is 75, still going at it in Vegas. Good for them!!....al
