Topic: Who played Steel w: Louis Jordan ? |

Greetings y'all.
i was listening to a Louis Jordan CD the other day. On this " Boogie in the Barnyard " tune there's a Break w: a Steel playin.
Anybody knows who that Steeler was ?$

i got a reply via Email on this post from a fellow called Roger.

the style of playing reminds me a little bit of Speedy West.
To the best of my knowledge i believe that Speedy arrived in Calif. in 1949.
As for Jody, i think he may have been 10 years old in 1947, so that would rule him out
Herb Remington and Joachim Murphy were in Calif. at the time but it does'nt sound like either of them.
i am listening to the recording now as i am writing this.
i think it must be Noel Boggs !
Let's see if someone comes up w: some proof ?

| There was already a discussion about this, maybe 6 months ago. You could search the forum, I of course forgot who the steel player was, but Speedy sounds right. |

The steel solo on "Barnyard Boogie" was by Carl Hogan, an electric guitarist who was featured on many of Louis Jordan's sessions around that time. I don't know if he was a regular member of the Tympani Five or not. It's pretty obvious from the solo that he has only a rudimentary knowledge of the steel, and it was probably included as a novelty effect. The solo is basically one grip and a doo-wa, a la speedy, but it adds a little something different to the standard jump blues sound.
The band I play in, the JiveMasters, covers this song, but I don't do the original steel solo, which I think is a little lame, to be honest. It's a fun song to play, though. |

I never recorded with Louis Jordan,,but I did
with Duke Ellington,,,,how old does that make me?? Gene ,,,I like this fellow,,,he makes me feel so young,,,,makes me feel like spring has sprung,,,

It wasn't me on the Louis Jordan recording, incidentally. I was only two years old and not getting very many sessions at that time. Come to think of it, I'm STILL not getting very many sessions!

Herb,,,no sessions??? I have a "session today" I have to lie on a couch and "tell all"

never knew I was that important,,,here i'll give ya a clue..
I was at Leo Fenders "bar mitzvah" I played his first steel guitar,,,he made it in the workshop class in the 5th grade...Does that give a clue,,,,

I checked around,,,some say it was Roy Smeck
the "Wizard of the strings" btw I have had no replies re my qualifications,,,I guess the shoe size dont "fit" like that old saying

I can have him e mail you in German,,,I dont speak French...I do remember years ago,,,I met a frenchman.....he said to his girl friend
"kiss me yes??,,,,I said to him what does that mean...he said its the way we make love in France,,,,I said Kiss me "yes" in the USA thats how we keep our jobs,,,,only the yes was pronounced with an "A" easy for me to say

Geez guys, I missed this one entirely.
All I can add is that Speedy West hit California in the mid 1940s, he was playing with Ray Hahn's group as early as 1946, then gigs with the likes of Spade Cooley (1948), Reg Egner & Billy Hill (1948), Hank Penny (1948-1949), before joining Cliffie Stone's show and band in 1949, He made his recording debut in 1948, I think it was with Eddie Kirk.
To be honest, as I statred to read the topic I thought it might have been Speedy, but it wasn't. Oh well. |

Jody, I actually think that Jerry Gleason has already proposed the answer, which was Carl Hogan. It seems more than plausable and indeed most likely. Although I really wish Speedy or Joaquin or someone of that calibre recorded with Jordan.
What I find interesting is the fact that you recorded with Duke Ellington! |

I don't have a clue who played on the recording, but here is some info on The Speedster.
Speedy West was born January, 1925 at Springfield, MO. He was raised on a farm at Strafford, MO about 10 miles east of Springfield. He milked cows among other farming jobs. Lucky for us, he desired to pursue his dream of playing the steel guitar.
He arrived in CA around 1946. He had one of the very first pedal steel guitars made by Bigsby.
I'm so glad to call him a friend, and one of my mentors.
