Does it absolutely HAVE to be a Martin D41? I've got a Dana Bourgeois Ricky Skaggs model, signed by Ricky, mint condition. Built by Dana in 1994, I believe. Email me if you're interested. |

The only difference between a D28 and a D41 is the abalone trim and maybe gold-plated heads - it's purely cosmetic - while the Flagship, the D45, just has more ornamentation. The essentials (ebony fingerboard, mahogany neck and rosewood back and sides) remain the same. Of course the D35 differs from the other Dreadnoughts in that it has that three-piece back.
It's curious that the D35 has 'survived', as it was originally a clever ploy by Martin to utilize their dwindling stocks of Brazilian rosewood. Now the standard D35 has, like the other rosewood guitars, East Indian timber, that feature, too, is just cosmetic.
So, all other things being equal, a D28 will perform as well as its other more costly stablemates - it just won't glitter under the lights quite so much ...
I hope Joey finds what he's looking for - there are relatively few D41s out there.

There is one difference between the D-28 and the HD-28 and the upper priced models, "scalloped bracing." There is a huge tonal difference. |

I have a '72, first year they were built. This little girl has aged beautifully. Typical checking of the finish but has goldened over the years (top only). Did my 25 year Martin maintenance about 6 years back, pick guard and b-string crack infront of the bridge. Larry at the 5th string in Berkeley took care of it for me. The pattern on the back and book match is breathtaking, |

Eddie & Jim - I remember, as a poor college student in the early 1970's drooling over those HD-28's. I really wanted one, but (of course) could not afford one. Then, my favorite uncle sent me his 1950 D-28, which he no longer played.
I had to "settle" for that guitar.
