wordpad notepad?

After it opens in Wordpad, do Select All (in the Edit menu) and then change the font to Courier New.

Jim-- Since you say the stuff looks like it came thru an 'Enigma' machine, I assume it's a bunch of meaningless characters. If so, changing the font won't help.

Sounds like your email prog isn't decoding the attachment properly or that you're trying to open a non-text file in Wordpad.

What is your email program and version. What is the file TYPE you're trying to open (what are the three characters after the dot in the file name)??? --Everett

You need Microsoft word(cause it reads text and pics all in one).....if you don't want to spend the money on it......you can get a free word&pic viewer right here> http://office.microsoft.com/Downloads/2000/wd97vwr32.aspx

If it is a .txt file there shouldn't be any pictures in it. ".txt" is (properly) used to designate a text only file.

That particular file sounds like the person that sent it to you did not format the attachment or forward the message properly. This happens occasionally.

Using MSWord won't help either. MSWord will handle mixed text/graphics but MSWord files are normally .doc files. If a file starts out as a MSWord doc file and is converted to a text file (.txt) generally all of the formatting including any graphics will be lost.

What to open it depends on what type of attachment it is. The jibberish file in wordpad might be an e-mail business card/signature attached to the mail. (I was going to add them to my out going mail, but I've been so suspect of add on attachments, that I decided not to.)

Sometimes those "ATT*.txt" files contain formatting for HTML email. I've run into that before where intended attachments were somehow embedded into that file. Have the person format their email for plain text, then the attachments should come through as intended. Microsoft has something on it at their web site.

Notepad and Wordpad are for text files and will not read files in other formats, even if the files in other formats contain only text.

Try Opening the file with "Word".

Jim-- 'Earthlink' is an internet provider(ISP) but I don't believe it is an email client. Does your mail come up in an 'Outlook' window or 'Eudora' or what???

That mail might have been sent as 'UUENCODED', for which some email app's have a decoder and others need an 'add-on'.

Have you tried contacting the person who sent it, to see what the email contained and how THEIR program was setup to format it???

Quite a while back someone who I received frequent email from would have attachments named ATT00000.TXT I asked the person sending if they had sent an attachment to me by that name & they said no. I came to the conclusion that the sending email software was creating it for its own use & that I could ignore it.
I'm not sure, but I think the Earthlink client software includes email software.

The most likely scenario is, "This happens most commonly with an Internet mail client that is sending an attachment and also appending an auto-signature."

Jim-- I got the email and have done just a bit of work on it so far. Got to take my Mom to the dentist wed morning so it'll be awhile getting back on it.

I opened it in a 'hex'editor and can see it's a collection of .jpg and .gif graphics put together as a multi-part message. Among other things, there was an 'in the clear' line of text that said "This message is in MIME format. Since your mail reader does not understand
this format, some or all of this message may not be legible."

Did that come from YOUR email program??? I can't tell from what I am able to see, so far, whether that applied to you or to the person that sent you the message. The problem I'm having initially is that the 'attachment' is, in fact, an email message - not just an attached file.

I'll try to split the various parts out and create individual files but that will do nothing to keep it from happening again.

When I get mail from Smiley Roberts, there is an attachment that is a copy of that mail. Smiley's mail is WebTV based. Is the attachment you're trying to decipher on a message from a WebTV address?
I still think that if it's pictures, it's probably a HTML copy of the mail, but with graphic inserts. Maybe for border, background, etc...
