Saving Forum Pages

Post by J D Sauser »

Over the past years I have saved a bunch of threads off this Forum.
I use Windows (and hate it Image) and IE.
I save those files as "Webpage complete" ...html files.
Everytime I do that, it will also create a little folder with pictures such as the pingu, the sunglasses, envelopes and such.... They are all the same (?). Nevertheless, for every page I save it creates another folder with the same stuff in it.
Thus the question:
Is there a way I could re-name ONE of these folders so it would provide all these goodies for ALL the pages I saved and then delete the duplicate folders?

Thanks! universal_tuning@yahoo.com?subject=SG-Forum/Computers/Qure the folders

I find it a lot easier just highlight, copy and past text into a word processing file.

JD, I don't think you can have just one reference. Each separate page has to have it's associated data.

You are better off as Andy suggested, just copy everything in the thread to a wordprocessor and then save the file. It may not be as pretty, but it will avoid all the extra garbage.

JD,

Save each forum page as a single web page, HTML only. The links to the images will be to b0b's server. If you're online, they'll display properly. If you're offline, they'll shown up as broken images in your browser but you'll still be able to read the text.

IE, in its usual brain-dead manner, saves web archives by altering the original links in the source code to point to a different folder named after each separate page. If you're industrious, you can change those links to a common folder using a batch search and replace.

Myself, I'd just save the single files.

Regards,
Jeff

I send the topic to may favorites list for later review. If I determine I still think the material is important, I will do a cut/paste into a Word document. I then will delete all the "web garbage" (usually in blue) and delete any comments that aren't worth taking up space. This method reduces the number of pages by almost half. I then do a printout, three hole punch, and put in a binder. Sound like a lot of work, but its not really once you get the process down.

When I save something from the web, I simply click FILE, SAVE AS. 'MY DOCUMENTS'
is what pops up and I just save the page here, because it is the easiest and quickest place to put anything.

But before I save the web page, I click on the down arrow in the bar 'SAVE AS TYPE' and save it as WEB ARCHIVE, SINGLE FILE, [*.mht].

In my case, when I go back to retrieve the saved web page, it comes up automatically, as I have cable, so I don't know what it would look like without being online.

Oh yeah. Almost forgot. You can rename the
page as well. <FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by CHIP FOSSA on 09 August 2001 at 06:01 AM.]</p></FONT>

I think Jeff summed it up in two words:
...IE... in it´s usual <u>brain death</u> manner... Image

Thanks! ... J-D.
