Topic: Removing programs from opening on startup (PC) |

Got a PC machine. Windows 95. In the bottom right of the screen are a bunch of icons for things I really don't need to have open automatically everytime I boot up. How do I stop them from opening automatically? (I don't want to delete the programs themselves, of course. Also, I know I can close each one separately after booting, but I want to prevent them from running in the background in the first place upon booting).

| Hi Jim-- Start menu- Programs- Startup- gives a list of some programs that startup when windows boots- you can just right click on them and delete what you want. Also- some of the icons that you see you can right click on them directly and delete them- don't worry- you're not deleting the program~~ |

Hi, Jim. Nothing happened when I right-clicked on them. No menu for deleting appeared. As for clicking on the icons themselves to delete them, that seems to only delete them for this occasion, but they always return on boot-up. I don't want them to return. Any more ideas? Thanks!

Jim, this is Jim. Jim was almost right, but Win95 doesn't give you the option to delete the startup programs from Start-Programs-Startup. Instead, find Programs-Startup with Windows Explorer and delete them from there. It's been a while since I used 95 so search for "Startup". This is Jim signing off to Jim and Jim.  |

Thanks, John. I hadn't noticed that thread before. Only thing is when I entered "MS CONFIG" in the Run dialog box, it said it couldn't find "MS (or one of its components)". Now what do I do?

| Jim, Jim here again. I get so confused with all the "non-Jims" jumping in here. In the run box, type "msconfig" with no spaces and no quotes. Now that I think about it more, 95 may not have msconfig. It may have started with 98. |

Jim Cohen-- MSConfig is not in W95x.
With WindowsExplorer,you can navigate to the Windows/Start Menu/Programs/Startup folder. Then move items from there to another folder or to your desktop.
Remember, though, the 'startup' folder is only ONE place that should be considered. The Windows Registry may contain 'startup' info in several different locations not easily found or understood. Also, the WIN.INI file can contain entries that cause programs to be loaded.
Changing either file CAN be done but may result in serious problems if errors are made.
Here are a couple of better (IMHO) solutions:

I just downloaded/installed/checked them out. Both do the job, are easy to use, and are fairly small (less than 500k) to DL. Both scan the 'startup' folder, Registry and INI files. They show what/where entries are found and give you total control over them.
I suggest, however, you ONLY 'uncheck' or,
subsequently, 'check' which items you want unless you REALLY know how to use the other functions.
'Start Up Manager',the first link, above, is FREE. 'Custom Start Up' is a 30 day evaluation of a $10 shareware program.
Be careful in any case as some 'tray items' represent an application for which several individual programs/modules got loaded. Precluding some, but not all, the 'pieces' may do ????.
The $10 program includes a backup/restore
function and that may be worth a few bucks.
