I posted one of my jazz steel files in the "events and announcements" section, and was wondering if any of you have done much mp3 encoding.

The file I posted is a three minute stereo Mp3 file that is 3.5 MB in size after encoding at a bitrate of 160k. I'd like to get the file size down a little smaller. I have tried lower bitrate, but even 128k sounds bad, with artifacts that resemble flutter on a tape recorder.

160k sounds pretty good, but I'm wondering about variable bitrate enecoding. Do all Mp3 players support variable bitrate? Are all Mp3 encoders equal in performance?

Try knocking down your sample rate before doing the encoding. If your sample rate is 11kHz you'll lose a bit of high end, but that high end is where the most annoying MP3 artifacts occur.

Also, mixing to mono before encoding will knock the file size in half. It's a bit trickier to mix, but good mono beats warbly stereo!
