I'm tired of getting hit with trojan backdoor attempts and other internet probes. Does anyone know of a good firewall program for a stand alone Win98 PC connected through a dial up connection? I see adds for Black Ice. Has anyone used this program? Any shareware or freeware programs out there?

I run InoculatePE and F-Protect(DOS) virus scanners which find some of the SubSeven variants and I don't download .exe or .com files, but I would like a little more protection.

Most firewall programs seem to be configured for EtherNet systems or LANs. I need something for a stand alone AMD K6 with a 56K dialup.

Thanks,

Bill

Take a look at Black Ice Defender.

Check out this website, and free (for personal use)firewall software. You can test the state of your current internet security there, and there's lots of good info:

I'm going to try the free firewall, & will report back on the results.

Thanks guys,

I had seen the Shields Up site, but not the firewall software.

Anyone know how to configure a firewall for Windows 98 ICQ (Internet Connection Sharing)? I loaded Black Ice and it worked fine until the other computers tried to access the Internet. Their website site says their firewall will not work with sharing.

I use a product called WinProxy. It's been consistently been given top ratings. It's real easy to install and is highly configurable. It will also let you share your modem connection with other computers on your home network. Their web site is:

I locked down Windows file and port sharing and installed the free ZoneAlarm firewall this weekend (see link to Shields Up above). So far it seems to be functioning well. Hope it's not some NSA trojan in disguise. . .

Creepy. That was my very thought as I downloaded it. It's like how would you know?
