I tried one many years ago. It sounded very artificial although maybe they've been improved by now.

I love compressors!
I prefer not to use picks.
With the use of a good compressor and with some careful adjustment, I can get the snap of a "picked sound".
It is best to use a good compressor, not just your average stomp box, (I currently use a Alesis Nano compressor).

I used a dbx163 (I think that's the model), 1/2 rack model for many years. A very small amount is all that was needed to tighten the sound IMHO.

I use an "Alesis 3630" after a Profex II.
Sounds Great !! Stero all the way.

Seperate the speakers about 10-15 feet apart or go into a mixer-board using two channels,one channel panned right, the other panned left, the resultant sound to a tape recorder is almost as good as a mixed down master.
