Item # 7390877541

A pre WW2 Martin D-45 in almost mint condition.
I know that those old Martins are great guitars, but a quarter of a million?

Somebody has a lot more to spend on their toys than I do.
[This message was edited by Mike Perlowin on 02 March 2006 at 11:40 AM.]

Well, they probably had the frets polished, replaced the pickups, added a new nut...

There were 91 of these guitars built during that era. I remember when D-28 herringbones were going for three and four grand, about twenty or so years ago. Now they're at LEAST 10 times that much. Somebody has made a pretty good investment, if the buyer can wait a little while. One thing's for certain---That guitar will ALWAYS be worth what was paid for it.

For that kind of money I could buy a durn-near mint Taylor, a climate-controlled house to put it in and a little guy with a feather duster to keep it all pretty... Image

Yeah yall that was me. I just HAD to have it. Image

No way I'd spend that much on one guitar. Maybe a nice big bunch of guitars but not just one.

I was just up in the bay area and we all were hanging at a collector's, in Berkely. A warehouse space filled with vintage guitars and amps, wonderful environment. So while everyone was looking around, I sat down on an amp and picked up a black-pickguard Telecaster, that was leaning aginst an amp and started noodling around on it. It was light and felt really good. When I asked how much it was going for, it was $60K. That's not a misprint, $60,000. The owner was very happy because he had just picked up another Tele that he paid $45K for. I need to get out more. I had no idea.

Evidently, vintage guitars had a bigger return than the stock market and the real estate market, so all these investors are snapping them up.

I wish I'd had the foresight, and the CASH, to get in on some of this stuff a few years ago! There's a guy near here who's trying to sell one of Keith Richards' old Les Pauls, for 400,00 dollars! And George Gruhn had a '59 Les Paul, was asking 275 grand for it. Course, I remember when my buddy's older brother bought a new '64 Corvette, 327, fuel injection, convertible hard top--I saw the guy a while back, he said he paid 400.00 for it new. Some stuff, like quality American cars, and guitars, turn out to be good investments, as well as being fun to own.
How much do you think "the Blade" would sell for, if Buddy Emmons ever put it up for sale?

A guy I knew (a doctor) a few years ago had 3 of them! Played one at a jam without realizing it was NOT a reissue. He's had them for years, got 'em before the prices were completely nuts.

I'm always surprised at how low the guitar apprasals are on Antiques Roadshow.

Gees, Makes that mint 1970 Lefty walnut ES-335 for 3850.00 I've had my eye on on ebay seem cheap in comparison, and a good investment. I wonder if my wife would agree, sounds like a good story to me.

Not much, because we would whine and moan about what a limited vintage guitar it is without the "franklin changes and crawfrord clusters" and how much cheaper you could buy "...insert-your-favorite-$2500-pedal-steel-here" Image
[This message was edited by Jussi Huhtakangas on 04 March 2006 at 10:17 AM.]

I suspect it was bought for an investment, and will be sold for over a Mil in a few years.
