Sacrelige!

Post by Robert »

I'm listening to some old Eddy Arnold as I write this - "Don't Rob Another Man's Castle", etc. - I know I'm opening myself up for a good bashing here, but I've never been too crazy about "Mr. Ting-A-Ling". It's that damned trilling/descending lick: it makes me nuts! Maybe these songs wouldn't be the same without it, but that lick is for the birds . . .

Everybody to their own opinion. Little Roy was the reason I took up steel. I would buy the Eddy Arnold records just to hear Little Roy.

BTW, most of those records were cut in Chicago. Image

They're good songs, sung by a great singer. It's not even ALL of Roy Wiggins' playing that I don't like - it's just that one pet lick that he used so often. BTW - "Steel Guitar Rag" was cut in Chicago, as well. And some great Roy Acuff, too.

Hey Jack, you won't believe who I saw a couple of weeks ago at the Long Hollow Jamboree?...Mary! She and her husband came out to hear the band. After Roy closed his store on Broadway she went to work at ET's Record Shop for awhile then went to work for the state until she retired. Had not seen her since around 1976. Image

Earl, I didn't know she was still around. I knew she went back to the ET shop but that's the last I heard.

If you see her again, say hello for me. She was the one that really kept everything together at Little Roy's store.

After realizing that Eddy Arnold would not pay a single dime toward Little Roy's tombstone, I have absolutely no use for him.

I suggest you just record the steel parts off the recordings and then burn the original recordings.

I am thankful to Mr. Weirauch for giving us the opportunity to contribute.

Little Roy made Eddy Arnold, although Eddy would not agree. When I worked for Roy back in the early 70's he was still good friends with Eddy and lived close to Eddy in Franklin, Tn. However, Eddy didn't want to be associated "with those hillbilly's at the Opry". That alone soured me on Eddy and I wouldn't have considered asking him to donate to Roy's fund.

Eddy is sort of like the A-Hole song, "where you born an A-Hole or did you just get that way". Eddy just got that way.... Image

I heard a story once, that Eddy, after going "pop",was being introduced on a stage show,& the announcer intro'd him as "The Tennessee Plowboy",(the name he started his career with,) & he refused to come out on stage.

Forumites:
I've asked Janice to close this thread - I started it, and I'm sorry I did, as it's turned ugly. If I'm responsible for unwittingly making it so, then I'm sorry. For those concerned with my anonymity - I've contacted Bob about rectifying that situation by changing my ID at some later time, when the news is less grim and matters such as these don't seem so trivial.

Thanks,
Rob
