RIP rock legend John Phillips

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rock and roll veteran John Phillips, the
founder and main songwriter for the 1960's California pop group the
Mamas and the Papas, died of heart failure Sunday morning, his
spokeswoman said. He was 65.

Phillips, who received a liver transplant several years ago after
years of drug and alcohol abuse, died at UCLA Medical Center at 8:15
a.m. PST (11:15 a.m. EST), surrounded by family and friends, said
spokeswoman Elizabeth Freund.

I'm sorry to hear this. The Mamas and Papas were a big part of my musical background, along with the Lovin' Spoonful. RIP.

I believe Mackenzie Phillips who,along w/ Valerie Bertinelli & Bonnie Franklin,starred on the tv series,"One Day At A Time",was his daughter. I,also,believe she was "written-out" of the show,because of drug-related problems.

A true pioneer, and a great songwriter. That's too bad-and Smiley is right about MacKenzie.

John was in the same league as Brian Wilson,
as far as vocal harmonization, composition,
and arrangements go. A gifted songwriter
and musician....I'll surely miss him.

They were actually trasplanted (The Mams's & the Papa's) from the Wash DC area..Alexandria, Va..as I recall.They made thier 1st cut there in Washington..then moved on to California. The fame was TOO much
The music was good ..then deteriated..as did thier strength...

Regarding the Mamas and Papas -- I think I remember reading that the original lineup (w/ John, Michelle, Denny and Cass) was together only a matter of months and they recorded almost all of their material in a few weeks at the most. Interpersonal problems (mostly caused by Michelle Phillips) along with substance abuse, caused strains that broke the group apart soon after it was formed.

MacKenzie Phillips is John's daughter by a marriage previous to that with Michelle. MacKenzie was supposedly named after "_____" MacKenzie, who wrote the song "Are You Going to San Fransico?" which was written for the Monterrey Pop Festival of 1967, which John Phillips was instrumental in organizing.

Like father, like daughter, MacKenzie Phillips had serious substance abuse problems which apparently began when her father went to New York, abandonning MacKenzie in California in John's rented house. Her subsequent drug abuse caused her to be kicked off the "One Day at a Time" sitcom several times before she was finally booted out permanently because she was totally unable to perform. Previously she appeared in the movie "American Grafitti" when she was fairly young (12 or 13?). [This message was edited by Tom Olson on 19 March 2001 at 08:37 PM.]

"If You're Going to San Francisco" was written by John Phillips, and premiered by Scott MacKenzie at the '67 Monterey Festival.
