Under Your Spell Again ?

Post by John Steele (deceased) »

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a fair show which featured an up-and-coming local New Country singer, Johnny Reid. The band was hot! (Al Bragg on steel... woohoo !)
They played a collection of newer country material.. the stuff more on the country side of the fence.. and a few cuts from their new CD. I really enjoyed it.
Anyway, about 3/4 of the way through their show, they let out with "Under Your Spell Again" ! (My favourite Buck tune). I was all grins from ear to ear.
I have to admit, I was a bit surprised.
My question is:
Has someone re-releasd this classic tune? Or did they just pick it out? It stuck out in a program of more "current" music. I never got the chance to ask them.

I think Bill Kirchen may have recorded it more recently; he plays it during live shows, I know.

Wow!
Thanks Donny, Jim. I had no idea it had been released that many times.
Jim, perhaps you're right, maybe Kirchen's recording has made it popular again. I hope so !

Buck Owens also recut "Under Your Spell Again" as a duet with Dwight Yoakam on his "Hot Dog" album about 1988 on Curb/Capitol Records. I think it is still available. Great steel by Ralph Mooney and Terry Christofferson!!

just a related note to your question - a friend of mine was just down to Austin awhile back to cut an album at Willie's Perdernales studio (Mr Steiner did his steel work!) anyway, most all original songs he's written, but he wanted to do an old Buck tune for a cover and me to pick it - I suggested "Gonna Have Love" and he nailed it wonderfully, changed it up with a hot key change for the last break and chorus.

the fun part of the story - when contact was made with Buck's royalty man, when he asked "o.k., what song are you boys interested in?" - his response back was, "Really??... I don't think anyone has ever covered that one for an album!!" and he was tickled that someone had interest in cutting it. Pleased me too! - Neil H.
