35th A.C.M. Awards show...

Well, I figure I might as well start this one off. There will probably be a range of comments, but mine will be short and kind. Surprised? Well, it wasn't exactly the "Louisiana Hayride", but for a Hollywood production, it wasn't that bad. (For me...that's a compliment!) I had expected to see only a couple of token glimpses of steel, and hear only a couple of licks, but I was rather surprised.

Just about everyone had a steel, there musta been a dozen, and there were even more than a few of those "old time" licks that some say are, well..."old time". That just goes to show you never know what to expect. There were some of those "mostly pop-rock new country" numbers, but there was some of the good ole stuff as well. more than I had hoped for. I know that it's not a "steel show", per se, but I think we fared OK in this one. It was good to see George, and the tribute to Tammy was nice as well. Dolly did a good job of making it feel "down home". I won't comment on the awards, because there were so many, and because steel players don't care much about what the singer gets anyway!

I hope we do as well on the C.M.A. show!

I don't think I've ever seen more leather pants in one place. I think I've seen enough of Faith Hill & Tim McGraw for any one lifetime. It's still on and it keeps getting worse.

what a waste of good TV time they should have put reruns of Batman onand those who watched it all missed a good Hockey game HO! HUM!!!!!I guess thats what country garbage has gotten lowered too

I happened to start watching it when they were doing the Tammy Wynette tribute. Managed to sit through Shelly Wright doing Single White Harlot and the three nominees for Best New Female Vocalist (that second one didn't hit one note that wasn't flat) and turned the TV off when that Rock band that had a lead singer with the shaved head started playing. I was not impressed.

Besides, I got to hear what would have been my favorite part. The radio played back Alan and George's opening performance this morning.

Let's face it, it all started when Olivia
Newton-john won female country vocalist of the year. She was ask later her thoughts on
Hank Williams (not Jr.) She said " I think he's great and hope to meet him one day.
Now we have Tim Mcgraw showings how FLAT
a person can sing and still Win over Alan
Jackson. I really wonder how much longer the likes of Alan Jackson will be able to stand up there in that company and suffer through it?? Dick Clark has as much to do with REAL COUNTRY MUSIC as Tommy Lee.
My one positive comment, is I noticed the
Steel Guitar center stage on a couple of numbers. Now, I feel Better

Ok folks, why do you watch when you know what you're going to get? Why do you folks look to Nashville as the Country Music Mecca? It hasn't been since they kicked Willie out. You know they are catering to the young female record buyers, and you know the crap they listen to. What do you expect? So why are we whining about it? Jim Lauderdale just got dropped, Dale Watson was again rejected as "too country". You wouldn't be hearing anything about George Jones if it wasn't for Alan Jackson. There is no Country Music Capitol anymore. So quit watching there stupid award shows if you know it will disappoint you. The big Nashville labels have forced the real country artists to be fragmented to smaller or independant labels. So the good news is, REAL country music is flourishing. Down here in Texas it sure is, and I'm sure the rest of the country has local country stations or Americana stations to give airplay. So forget about Nashville having anything to do with country music. Those days are gone.

Hey Chris...I put out a weekly "Country Update" and I was trying to figure out just the right wording to say what I thought of the entire awards show in my "Sound Off Section"...I wrote some lines but when I seen your post I copied it and I am going to include it in the next "Country Update"...I think you said all there really is to say...I so much agree with your comments!!!

George Strait and Alan Jackson were as out of tune as anyone.
I thought they "murdered" Murder.

I agree with Chris S. You folks that like to complain about the state of what is called "country music" fail to address the fact that what is forced on the lemmings under the name "country music" is not country music at all. I watched a little of this television program, just for laughs (because if I were to take it at face value, it would make me puke), and there were plenty of laughs. Here are my top 3 moments of this awards show:
1. Sawyer Brown performing as an R.E.M. cover band
2. Wynona Judd performing as Boy George, complete with non-gender specific dance team
3. The camera panning to George Strait & Alan Jackson when Tim McDouchebag won best moustache.

Here is a quesion that could probably be a thread of its own: When Natilie Mains gets to be as fat and un-atractive as Wynonna Judd, will the Dixie Chicks be forced to hang it up, or will they be a distant memory by then anyway, so noone will even know who Natalie Mains is anyway, or will they just send the skinny good looking sisters to accept awards for them??

I liked it! I thought leading off with "Murder on Music Row" followed with George J. was a pretty strong statement.
There was even a few quick shots of some steels.

Tom, Right on. I started to clean my ears
because no way can Allen and George sound
that FLAT. What was wrong? I walked away
from the T.V. and went to check out old
post's on the steel guitar forum, because
if they sounded that bad, then it would only
get worse.

Check my opinion out on the off topic catagorey. I said earlier that I should have posted on the bar chatter cat,
but I was wrong. This should have been posted in the off topic because it's as far from COUNTRY MUSIC, STEEL GUITAR, OR ANY OTHER FORM OF COUNTRY THAT I'VE EVER, DID I SAY EVER HAEARD.

As far as the production quality, I thought the levels and balance were quite good. All the singers and instrument levels were O.K., much better and more consistant than the Opry. The Opry will sound good one week, and then highly unbalanced the next. (They just don't pay as much attention to the sound in Nashville.)

Everyone had a steel except Jo Dee Messina (I think?), Sawyer Brown (they didn't need one...they had a keyboard player in pajamas), Clint Black (he had 8 violins...shades of Ray Price), Martina BcBride (I was lookin' at her too much to even notice a steel...sorry), and Wynonna (who had no steelman...but lots of Twinkies).

The following singers used, and showed a steel...

George Strait-Alan Jackson
Lone Star
Asleep At The Wheel (Billy Gilman was GREAT!)
Kenny Chesney
George Strait
Cheley Wright
Dolly Parton (Dobro)

The following singers used an "unseen" steel player...

George Jones
Tim McGraw
Collin Raye
Toby Keith
Reba McIntyre

I know it wasn't "down home country", but at least they didn't blow us off completely. Remember, this was youth and Hollywood oriented. I'm glad they also didn't do any big "production numbers" like they did in the C.M.A. Awards' show last year. (Remember those "Peter Pans on Steroids" and the "Riverdance rejects"? I'm still gettin' compliments on that post!)

Richard I guess your night wasn't all wasted and Theresa maybe they should throw that worn out Rock and Roller Mr. Clark to the sharks he sure don't belong in country music gotta say one thing for the old gezzer he can talk outa both sides of his mouth and make some folks believe it the gospel truth but then some of were around when American band stand was when he laughed so hard and long at the hicky country singers.
