This is one of the Sho-Bud "reproductions" of the original Ric Fry-Pan, popularized by Jerry Byrd, and made quite some time ago.
It is an 8 string model with a "Horseshoe" style pickup, Volume and Tone knobs. Looks like it's made out of a high quality polished aluminum alloy, it's fairly heavy.
It's in excellent condition, comes with the original black hardshell case and the original certificate signed by Jerry Byrd.
The s/n is A12x, and I beleive this is the short scale model. Just put set of new strings on it, sounds great.

Just curious; Can anyone shed some light on the differences between this frypan that's almost (but not quite) identical to an Excel, and the Sho Bud Frypans with the card suits fretboard?

This guitar came in two differenct string lengths and I have the long scale model.
From what I understand, Jerry Byrd and Shot Jackson got together on this project with the understanding that only so many of these guitars would be produced and then the mold would be destroyed. However, Shot Jackson decided to keep cranking them out without the knowledge of Mr. Byrd. These "bootlegged" copies may have some differences from the "authorized" versions.
That's maybe where the card symbols fretboard came in.

My Excel JBFP is a joy; But I can't wait to get caught up enough around here to send a real Rickenbacker pu off to Aiello and Lollar for a tune-up, to put into the FP.

Indeed!
And for those that might not have read the history behind these; Jerry was personally involved in the design of these (and the Excels), and wouldn't approve of the prototypes until they were right to his liking; And when the prototype was right, Jerry reported that he could feel / hear it before he even plugged it in; Quite a testiment to a fine lap Steel.
