5 Minute tips for Hawaiian Steel Guitar #7

Post by Ryan Matzen »

Some folks have been asking me to do a few videos on Hawaiian steel guitar, so I thought I'd maybe try and blast a quick 5 minute one out each week for a while and see if it's of any interest. It's hard to get a point across in 5 minutes, but I'll give it a whirl for a while each Tuesday.

Here's the seventh one. This is a demonstration of a classic turnaround that's used in lots of Hawaiian tunes from the 20's once the Hawaiian bands started playing American jazz tunes. It has a nifty little progression that all players need to know, and it also allows us to dip our toe into the world of bar slants.

I'm using open G tuning for this (DGDGBD Low to High) but this would also apply to the high-bass tuning, or Dobro tuning (GBDGBD). Enjoy!

If you dig this, and want to see some more, let me know in the comments what you'd like to learn about, and hit the subscribe button. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.
