Well,
Steve Palousek and I have been asked to do a class on Thursday from 9am to 4pm...wow! It will be awesome. Intermediate to advanced...but even beginners will be able to learn from it. Also, Jim Palenscar will teach about steel guitar maintenance and upkeep. It will all be outstanding.
I will have classes this year on Friday and Saturday.
Friday - C6th beginner/intermediate and
Saturday - E9th beginner/intermediate.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the show and classes.

An Infinity D-10 with 8 & 9, now a Telonics Combo Amp with an M1XL TC effects unit, and a Telonics Volume Pedal with that crazy blue light, a Session 115 and matching cabinet, and a Peterson Flip tuner with another blue light!

My Friday class will be C6th beginner to intermediate in skill level.
I will be teaching several songs, tuning, basic pedals & knee levers, chord structure, classic grips to get those big fat C6th sounding chords. I'll taylor some songs that will utilize these grips, some licks with pedals and some without. as always, we will cover everything you need to get started right and headed down a good path. And we will cover basic scales and some harmonized scales.
Get there early and I'll always allow you to bring your steel if you're one of the first 6 to get there and set up. That's about the most we can have for the room that we have been given.
If you have a song on C6 that you've been wanting to learn...post it here asap and I'll try and incorporate it into the booklet, & I only have room/time for the 1st couple of responses. AND...don't post a song unless you're definitely coming to the class. I do look forward to seeing everyone and meeting new people and I thankfully enjoy seeing the ones that like to take the classes more than once.
BE ready to absorb a lot of material, record it, video it, write it down. We'll answer everyone's questions to the best of our ability, and go back and repeat a lick and I'll get with everyone and help you get it going correctly.
Saturdays class will be E9th beginner to intermediate in skill level.
This class is always very busy and full. I'll always try to have the basic info and begin covering/teaching everything you need to get started correctly. We'll cover tuning, pedals, knee levers, common setups (Day & Emmons), basic grips, single string, double string, and triple string licks, your finger picks, blocking, etc. I'll have some common licks to familiar songs to teach, and a few that are a little testier to master, but most definitely worth the little bit of extra effort needed to do it.
This year I am teaching The Girl In The Glass by Mike Sigler.
A wonderful country song that lots of steel players love to play. It is beginner to intermediate in level. It sounds a lot more difficult than it actually is. But I believe everyone will love learning to play this great song.
As always in all of my classes...you'll get a cd with songs, tracks, and some licks recorded, and a booklet with most everything we cover.

Dallas Classes update ** Good Stuff!! **

I'm receiving a few calls about the classes already. E9th is always very full;..usually around 25 or 30. C6th class had about 15 last year. If you want to bring your guitar to E9th....I'll allow 5 or 6 only up front...I guess if you're a little later...you could set up in back. C6th usually has 4 or 5 that bring guitars, so space is not a problem there at all. For the advanced class with Steve Palousek, I am not sure how many we will have, so you might be able to bring it if you want to try...we'll have to wait and see how many we have. In the E9th and C6th beginners...we talk about every aspect of learning and playing. bring your picks and we'll show you how I shape them. We usually have a highlight in the E9th class as my buddy Travis Toy likes to drop in and guest teach. He is to me, one of the best players out there today, so I let him teach whatever he feels is good. He is always a highlight at the Dallas show. He also popped in my Phoenix class a couple of weeks ago and everyone loved it. So Travis is a wonderful bonus when he makes it. Dallas is one show you do not want to miss!

Steel for sale
Just to let everyone know.
I will have a single 10 string Mullen for sale with an E9th setup similar to mine. I have it raised an inch over standard for me. I'll have it in all my classes and hopefully someone will take it home with them.

Please let me know if you are planning on attending any of my classes.
I really don't want to have an attendee of any class of mine to NOT have
a workbook. I usually have 20 or more at the E9th class, but only about
10 have spoken up. SO, I'll probably make 15 booklets. This is a light year,
I guess.
Only about 6 have spoken up about C6 class, so I'll make 10 or so.
If you are reading this, please let me know if you're planning to come.
I don't want anyone to have to pay to have a booklet shipped to them.

This was my first time at the Texas Steel Guitar Jamboree and as a beginner I attended the class with Larry Toliver. The class by itself was well worth the trip from Fargo. Larry Toliver and Travis Toy took the time to give us pointers on how to approach playing the steel, what to focus on when practicing, and tips too numerous to list here. This 3 hour small group instruction session was an immense help in my journey of playing the pedal steel. Thanks Larry and Travis!
