Gary Campbell
Another one of our Upstate SC steel players has passed away. Gary Campbell from Pelzer, SC passed last night. He was a great player. He played a red Whitney steel thru an old Peavey Session 400 that he loved. He had the best tone and loved to play! Gary will be missed. RIP, my friend!

I'm new to the forum and I was shocked to see that Gary Campbell had passed away. Did he attend the steel conventions in Saluda SC? There was a guy that I would talk to named Gary but I could never remember his last name. He was a good guy but I don't think he ever played at the show. Seems like he was a mechanic. Is this the Gary that You're referring to?

Gary lived in the upstate of South Carolina in the little town of Pelzer. He was a short, white haired man that played a red Whitney steel guitar. He often attended the show when it was in Saluda, SC. He was a good musician and my friend. I was his pastor at one time. He suffered a stroke and never made a full recovery. He passed away in a nursing facility. Gary is already greatly missed.

I'm sure sorry about Your friend Gary. The fellow i'm thinking of was thin not too tall and smoked a pipe. I never got a chance to see/hear him play although I heard He was a great picker.I'm guessing this may be a different guy from the one I knew. I really miss those shows in Saluda. Charles, Joe, and all of the other great players. I never whent to West Columbia. After it left Belevadere, I never went again.
