I self-published a new book on Economy Picking for steel guitar recently and I have just begun shipping the first batch of orders. I am also in the process of creating an assets page which will host video clips and audio tracks associated with the book.

I was really inspired to write this book because of the huge impact this has had on my own playing over the past few years. It is a technique was carried over from guitar playing, but I expanded on it to include some concepts I learned from various other instruments, such as the harp and piano, which are truly remarkable sources for the study of glissando.

Economy picking is an umbrella term that covers such techniques as sweep picking, rest stroke, and variations on glissando. I cover all of these in the book and provide examples for practice. This book is not full of filler, as this is basically a concept that begins with technique. Later editions will cover harmonic pathways and more. But the difference much of this has made in my own playing is pretty remarkable and noticeable. Caveat: it isn't easy.

Playing steel guitar, whether pedal or nonpedal, is filled with its challenges in terms of picking. I consider myself to be a medium-level picker, but frequently find myself in a position improvising where I will choose to play something comfortable rather than what I would actually like to play but choose not to because of its difficulty. I have spent a lot of years trying to work my way through that, and this is the first breakthrough I have ever had. It gives me freedom to pick things I previously couldn't.

There are a few arrangements in the book meant to show the techniques in practice. Steel Guitar Rag, Orange Blossom Special and an original called Economy Blues are used.

For more information, you can visit my web site: https://steelinstruction.com or click on the link in my signature below. The book is $30 plus shipping and is print only at this time. I have a limited supply available and they are almost sold out.
