Concerning the boots, I think those are just fabric leggings. Looks to me he's just wearing Chucks like a lot of rockers wear.
Agree, Taylors are good for pedaling imo. Ive got some orange ones i break out ocassionally.

He plays pedal steel on one track from his new album of blues-rock covers album.

Slash - "Metal Chestnut"

The cut of "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" with Demi Lovato on vocals and Slash rocking the talk box is awesome.
Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright. Give praise to the Lord with the harp, chant unto Him with the ten-stringed psaltery. Sing unto Him a new song, chant well unto Him with jubilation. For the word of the Lord is true, and all His works are in faithfulness. The Lord loveth mercy and judgement; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.
- Psalm 33:1-5

Slash just bought a new Jackson Pro V. He's getting serious about this.

I read a recent interview where he said he doesn't expect to become a great pedal steel player, he just wants to play for fun and play steel on a few songs in his shows. He also said this is something you need to practice "every f**king day!" He's got that right.

I think tab for that was posted here some time ago, or maybe I saw it on another site.

Someone who knows how to reach him, invite him to join us here. It would be interesting to follow his progress and he might actually enjoy it. Best resource he could have.

Actually the tab for "Sweet Child O' Mine" was originally posted here in 2008:
