Reassembled the changer. Lubed with TriFlow. Tomorrow I can install the lower return springs, put on a set of strings, and start rodding it.

This is great. I got a bottle of triflow equivalent from either Mullen or Williams, it has the needle applicator
I maybe inspired to do... something on my Carter, at least beyond replace torx screws, pull rods, dogbones. I just PM'ed guy who used to make lever reversers with rollers built in like Mullens.

I think someone has been adding LUBE on top of lube on top of lube etc...
My based on experience opinion , don't add lube to a changer because someone tells you it will solve some sort of problem. It creates a BIGGER problem. What you have here is incompatible LUBE sitting on top of other incompatible Lube.

Not done yet reinstalling FP on P0, nor the split to tune C when LKV and A are engaged. Those will have to wait. I'm having surgery Tuesday and won't be allowed to lift anything for 6 weeks. |

Updated pad, recovered with suede is mounted with standoffs so it does not set flush on the top of the cabinet. |

4 years later. You could have taken the red wire on the XR-16 and wired it to a SPST switch on one side and a wire to ground on the other side of the switch, and had options for both a humbucker and single coil pickup. I use it most in single coil mode but have the humbucker option for places where there are buzzing issues.

I can’t even begin to imagine why Carter used the dog bones with the little bend in the pull rod. Why didn’t they use the little collars with hole that would fit where dog bones fit. That way all you’d need would be a straight pull rod and would have been much easier to adjust. I’ve work on a few Carters and the dog bones are a pain. I can see no advantage whatsoever of them. My Magnum has eleven hole bell cranks which is much better and easier to work on. Can anyone give me an advantage. Would love to hear one.

Right Henry. The dog bones were someone's nightmare turned into a bad idea. I converted my E9 neck to Bill Lipscome's barrels, but couldn't afford to do my C6 neck, so they are still dog bones. I did find the the aluminum standoffs, and have a machinist friend that will drill the holes for the rod so I can convert my C6 neck. I already have lots of new stainless rod.

Henry, I agree 100% that dealing with the dogbones is a PITA. Bud Carter wrote something about their "advantages," getting another degree of adjustment by installing the rod above vs. below the dogbone. But still...
Richard, next string change I'll look at the pickup wires. I recall reading that some XR-16s have two sets of leads (a set for each coil), while others have only one. If mine has two then I'll find a way to install a switch.
My Sho-Bud pickup has a coil-tap. I added a switch like you'd have on a Strat, and wired it to give (a) entire coil, (b) one side to the center-tap, (c) other side to center, and (d) both sides in parallel, with the tap grounded. |
