Hi All,

I'm wondering if anyone might have some Mike Smith recordings they would want to share. I've seen some youtube clips that were phenomenal, his tune "Brown Baggin'" in the Dewitt Scott book, him live at Scotties with Paul Franklin. These are great, but I'm wondering if there's more. I saw that he was with the Gatlin Bros. in the mid 70's but couldn't find any substantial recordings with him on it.

Let me know what you know!

Thanks,
Jeff

I've got his excellent Dreams Of India album from '77... wish he'd done more!

Mike's an absolute monster player and a really good guy. The first ZumSteel I ever saw in person was being played by Mike when we did a show together in January 1978 with Gene Watson and The Gatlins. He had just recently gotten that guitar and let me look it over in great detail. He sounded fantastic.

Good to see him being recognized..!!

Dreams of India was released later on cd and added 2 extra songs. Creek Walk and I can't remember the other one. I've got a cassette he did that's killer.

I think it's been some years (twenty?) since Mike reissued 'Dreams of India' on CD.

He added two bonus tracks that he wrote and recorded in 2001; as fine as the original album was, these two gems ('Creek Walk' and 'Sunny T') are superb and would be worth the price all on their own!

I don't know Mike, although he was kind enough to respond to a couple of emails I sent him.

How I wish he would make another album! Mike draws from a deep musical well and makes music that challenges; he not only has prodigious chops, he also plays and thinks outside the box.

Mike G. Smith and Gary Carter have all these qualities in common; they're my two favourite players, despite their relatively low-profiles.

More music, please, Mike (and Gary!) Smile

Some things here you might not have heard.

Also, open the forum search page and use the Google box to search on Mike's name for some other bits and pieces.

FWIW, Dreams of India is from 1977. Terrific album of steel guitar music.

Thanks for the clips and info everyone. He kinda sounds like a piano player playing steel. This is an amazing solo!
