Topic: Jimmy Page & Pedal Steel on Led Zeppelin Albums? Really? |

Hey all,
My wife got me this great "Led Zeppelin - All the Songs" book (well, great if you like Led Zep  ). Anyway, I just ran across an entry that completely surprised me. The book reports Jimmy Page saying he played a Fender 800 on a couple LZ songs. "You're Time is Gonna Come" from the 1st album and "Tangerine" from the 3rd album.
I was skeptical so gave the tracks a listen...and there it is! On "Your Time is Gonna Come" it begins at the 3:48 mark running until the end of the track. It's mixed pretty deep in the background, but it's there and I never noticed it before:

On "Tangerine" from the 3rd Led Zep album, it's there on the refrains (0:57 & 2:06) and the outro beginning at (2:37) and much more up front in the mix and easier to hear.

He's not playing anything difficult, but I had no idea he was a versatile enough guitarist to drag out a Fender 800 and play some nice parts that really add to the songs

He's got nothing on John Paul Jones' level of multi instrumental talent but that's pretty cool. I guess I wasn't imagining having heard some PSG on Zepp tunes.
Makes sense why he was playing a bunch of b-bender later on.

Agreed. JPJ was really the glue that held LZ together and filled the empty spaces with his many musical talents (from playing to arranging). It's funny, I've heard Tangerine literally dozens of times and Jimmy's pedal steel never jumped out at me...until now when I knew it was there |
Yup, never realized how much so til I was listening to the Them Crooked Vultures album heavily.
He brings back that Trampled Under Foot funk!

I hope they make another album while they still have JPJ around.
His keys work is mighty underrated imo it's the reason "No Quarter" is my favorite Zepp tune.
He's even got a bass lap steel!

In addition to "Tangerine", there's another song that featured pedal steel on Zep III; "That's The Way". This song has some very beautiful, albeit simple, steel parts in it.
Regarding "Your Time Is Gonna Come", the pedal changes are considerably out of tune on this track. According to Jimmy Page, this is because he ordered the Fender by mail and he set the up guitar himself and didn't do it properly. He says he just put the pedal steel away after recording that song and didn't use it again until he decided to use it on Zep III, at which time he had it professionally set up.
And that picture of Jimmy playing the MSA, I too first saw that years ago. He never used it in the studio, and I could never find any video or audio recordings of Jimmy playing the MSA or any other pedal steel live.

Did a Google reverse image search of that shot of Jimmy with the MSA. Best info I can find says it wasn't taken during a live performance but at a rehearsal for the '77 tour at Manticore Studios (an old theater owned by Emerson, Lake & Palmer). Here's some other shots supposedly taken that same day:
In a Feb '77 interview a few months before the tour began Page said: "We've got such a variety in there - Oh, 'Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You' is another number that we've been using pedal steel guitar instead of the usual. So it sounds pretty different from the original." Apparently he changed his mind as I saw them on the '77 tour (their final US date ever in Oakland, 7/24/77) and he didn't play PSG on the tour. In fact, setlists I found from that tour shows they didn't even play 'Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You'

That haunting outro of Over The Hills and Far Away has always intrigued me.
Sounds like an organ...
Very pedal steel-like but kind of sine-wavey and no vibrato. |
