Think it's more of supply and demand......yes they list for $1949 today.....but you can't even order a new one until Feb 2024.

This is a bit uncouth. He can ask whatever he wants. If you don't like the price, go to another ad. It's a beautiful piece, and I'm sure it plays and sounds great.

John, not being smart here, but have you ever played an Encore? They are way underpriced new. They are worth every penny he is asking. At present I own 8 steel guitars, an Encore is one. Of them all, the last one I would sell would be my Encore. I have wrote to Doug several times thanking him for building such a guitar. I know Bruce probably designed it, but Doug, even through all his medical condition, has been able to build one of the best affordable professional guitar for anyone starting out.

Jim, I hesitate to reply because this has somehow been twisted into a debate. My original post asked for justification of a substantial premium for a used guitar. If your neighbor offered to sell you his used car for more than the dealer you might care to ask why. He, of course, has the right to do so. The seller of this guitar replied that he hopes for a premium as arbitrage on the wait time. OK, there is my answer and I assumed that would be the end of it.

I have not played an Encore. I do own and play a Stage One. I recently wrote Doug asking to be placed on his Encore order list for next year. I also offered to accept a cancel if that should happen this year. At no point have I questioned the merits of the Encore or it's worth.

"Doug, even through all his medical condition, has been able to build one of the best affordable professional guitar for anyone starting out." Clearly I agree as I am his target demographic. I also wish him the best in health and life in general. In my opinion, Doug has performed a public service in generating interest in the pedal steel. Beginners, myself included, likely would have never considered a pedal steel without his efforts.

Yes, I totally understand. I have ow Ed three of the StageOnes. You know then how. Nice they are. You won’t be disappointed on the Encore. I never meant anything negative to you or anyone. I only meant what a professional guitar it is for the money. I do agree they sell for more than a new one, but the wait time, I guess offsets the cost. When I bought my Encore I paid $2650 for it, but it was over a year for a new one. I never regret it, nor do I regret it. The quality of them is tops. I meant nothing more than, they are worth what someone is willing to pay. I apologize if I offended you, I never meant too.

John,

Much of this could have avoided by sending the seller a private message. In general, I've found during my couple of decades on the forum, that many consider it bad form to complain about the price in someone's ad. If you needed justification ,a private message or email helps keep the forum civil.

I don’t think John’s question is necessarily a bad one. I think what caused all the anguish was using the the word “justify”. It’s kind of accusatory, or at the very least, adversarial.

Doug is a great guy. I'm surprised he still answers the phone when I call. The issue I thought I had turned out to be my feet and bandmates. I got home from playing one night when nothing sounded or felt right to me. It wasn't the Encore. After the gig I put the uncased steel in the very back of my truck, left it in the truck all night. Put it in the house and let it sit until today and it was in perfect tune. Even the pedals and knees. Best of luck Mike, I hope someone grabs it up soon.
