On a twin 8 string I use regular A6 and a variant of B11. I use the Petersen sweetened 'LA6' for the A6 neck and I like that. But whether I am tuning my B11 neck as standard intervals or try to temper by ear, it never sounds quite right. One element of the problem is that I extend B11 with G# and E on strings 7 & 8.

I tend to think of the overall tuning in terms of ii-V-I, meaning I have the ii-7 on strings 1-4, the V stack from string 6 and Maj 7 rooted on the 8th string.

Put together, it is a very chord rich stack but individual chords never sound quite in tune.

I would like to try tuning the B11 stack as tempered and then add the G# and E by ear but I am not sure how to temper the dom 7 & 9. I dont really use the 11th.

Of course this also raises the question: Am I making this too complicated?

Neat tuning.
Perhaps you can find a local teacher who can help with how to intonate it?
Good luck!

Let's offer another opinion.

There is a reason 12 tone equal temperament tuning exists.

Complex chords such as B11 are a good example!

Thanks to you both.

Very Happy Yeah, in south Germany where most people think I am playing a Zither incorrectly! This Forum has been the friendliest, open minded and most dependable teacher one can ask for!

Rob, you originally posted a longer reply which was actually very helpful and I started to use that - can you put that back because the information was golden!

I began to analyze the songs where I use that neck. I've noted that I tend to focus on the middle group (V7) more than the Maj 7 chord. I do use the latter but only when I need that chord. The problem I had, and Rob you hit the nail on the head with your previous reply, is that the two E's were never aligned.

I don't disagree David but the tempered A6 sounds right to me and my hope was that I could get this complex stack similarly aligned. But I have to admit, I never tried using equal temperament! Embarassed

So now I have a couple of things to try, equal temperament and focusing on the B7.

Thanks again.
