Here's to Tommy White for this monumental accomplishment....This single song video has over 200 million views. I believe it's the first pedal steel played at the Oscars. Tommy played the pure tone of the instrument. It was emotional, yet it did not sound Country. My hats off to TW here...He took the instrument out of its preconceived box into a new arena of listeners...Bravo!

It's the player, not the instrument, that defines what the instrument can do. What Tommy did with Lady Gaga and you did with Dire Straits is proof. Thank you both for exposing pedal steel guitar to new audiences. |

Was it Tommy that played on the movie sound track also?
The total number of hits on the various YouTubes of Shallow is probably over a billion. |

The steeler on the recording was the producers call...When it came time for performing it live she sought out Tommy. |

Paul is correct. There was a minimal and vague steel on the original from what I could tell. At rehearsal for the Grammy awards , Gaga being familiar with me through her music director, insisted I make it my own on pedal steel and remarked several times how much she loved it. I can only assume that’s what led her to also employ me for the Oscars and possible future dates. |

Cool version of the song. It sounds great, Tommy. Thank you and Paul for all that you are doing with your music and with our instrument.

Thank you so much for posting about this Paul! I hope steel players recognize I used your Franklin pedal change of lowering strings 5 & 6 a whole tone on the chorus! Perfect fit.🤗 |

As a non steel player, but a friend of the instrument, it is nice to recognize how the steel can blend into music of any genre and not just the genre it is most associated with.
Tommy, Great performance. Who is the music director that first suggested you to Lady Gaga? _________________ Remembering Harold Fogle (1945-1999) Pedal Steel Player

Jim Fogle,
I apologize for not replying to your question when the thread was active. A lot has happened since then.
Michael Beardon(google him), (Gaga’s MD)is responsible for my gigs with Lady Gaga. Michael is a total genius and very deep musician. I was scheduled for 2020 summer tour until covid-19 hit us. |

You need better speakers, Erv 🥴
Maybe it’s not in-your-face chicken pickin, but it’s definitely there in the background like a soft string section on LG’s verse, and then hitting some chords on the chorus. It’s subtle but beautiful, and you’d probably miss it if it wasn’t there.
I can’t listen to this tune without thinking of about a thousand male vocalists I’d rather hear singing it with her. |

Congratulations to Tommy on being the first pedal steel player on the Oscars.
Does anyone know who played on the recording?

Tommy was not the first to play steel at the Oscars.
Check out this youtube of Allison Moorer singing A Soft Place to Fall in 1999
Great song and great performance. Steel is not as prominent as in the original but it is there. Lots of shots of the player as well.

I believe the steeler in the Allison Moorer performance is Forumite Doug Livingston! |

Apologies to you mtulbert.
I was told by everyone employed and part of the Oscars including Gaga, I was the first pedal steel player to perform as a movie/artist contracted musician, not a pick up musician.
Hat off to those before me. |

No apologies are necessary Tommy. It is a great credit to your amazing legacy to be selected to perform at the Oscars. As Erv mentioned I wish I had heard more of you in the mix to be sure.
