one of my favourites is buddy's playing on george strait's "adalida".

one thing about buddy (coming from someone who wasn't really clued into his genius when i first started) is the breadth of his talent. a lot of the other players you mentioned really excelled in one style, or with one style of playing. buddy mastered all of it! from 50s to 90s nashville, california pop, texas swing, jazz and even outside stuff.

Thanks so much Dave! YOU NAILED IT!! So eloquently put too! He was a virtuoso in all styles and played exactly what the tunes needed that he was playing on.

Thanks, Roger, for all the info and the tips, Love 'Sold American'

Thought you would like this picture of the wife and myself a few years back at the Texas Country Music Ass. awards in Lubbock

"Who's the guy in the cowboy hat?"

"I don't know, but that's Craig Stock...."

I've actually met two of the people in that photo. Last time I met Kinky, he asked "Now, you're who?"

Nice photo, Craig!

You know? I have never heard the original of 'Sold American'. I must rectify that. I tend to think that, once Glen's sung something, nobody else need bother, but that's clearly a bit silly.

It's a clever song. It was Emmons' intro that first caught my ear, then that lyric!

Roger, great link to this tune. I'm tickled at the collaboration on a Kinky tune (that I did not know was his).
And Buddy is so clean.

What this thread has served to highlight, at least for me, is that although BE started off as a country musician (e.g. with Ernest Tubb) because it was the only game in town, he should not be judged as one.

His achievement was to show what else the instrument can do.
