Thanks Greg for those kind words. The front apron will be block sanded today and then in the next few days when i get a free moment (insert laughter here) I will put on the last coats of lacquer. Then we wait again.

Ok here is the front with the final coats all done. I tell you this phone camera sure does not pick up a lot or do the pictures justice, anyways because of redoing the front apron I have to wait before polishing the lacquer. So since everything else has been completed I'll update everyone once I start the next step.

See you all soon.

Sorry it has taken so long to update everyone. I ran into a bit of a snag. While I was inspecting the body and the necks to see how they are doing. I noticed a very rookie mistake. From the start of the Lacquering process, I forgot to use sealer before I lacquered. I must have been to exited to see the color on the guitar. Anyways without the sealer being applied first, there were small gaps between the 2 woods that the lacquer would sink down into and I would have a noticeable dip. It was especially noticeable on the binding of the necks. So the only recourse short of stripping and starting again was to use a small brush and fill in the dips with lacquer to make it flat again. Which of coarse takes a lot of time between filling and sanding. In the first picture this side of the necks have been corrected and in the 2nd picture I'm half done. Once this has been completed I will have to re spray the necks to make them uniform again, let them cure, and then I can polish in 30 days. I might get to play this thing by Christmas LOL.

Later Folks

Well today I'm going to start the polishing of the body and the necks of the guitar. I will start with 1000 grit and work my way up to 3000 depending on how easy the guitar takes to the sanding. I use a automotive block to get it flat as possible. Once I have a consistent satin finish I will wipe it down and start the final polishing process. I always like to use Norton Liquid ice for this. This stuff really does a wonderful finishing job on all my lacquer projects. However I must stress here you have to take your time when sanding and polishing and do not let it get to warm or you'll burn through the finish and then you will have to start refinishing from scratch again. I always like to use elbow grease for the best control but, for ease I will also use a foam pad and a power polisher or drill for a quicker result. This will bring it to a mirror finish. Then I will let the wood sit for a day and relax. Then a light wax and off to the next step. The last pictures are of the necks all finished, waxed and ready for install. I have also installed the chrome trim on the front and between the necks. In the next couple of days I'll clean up any left over residue, install the necks and start flocking the guitar.

Now that the polishing is done I have installed the necks and have decided to flock the underside of the guitar. The reason I wish to do this, is because 1 it seams to be a little traditional, and 2 to hide a few mistakes ...LOL plus I think it makes the guitar look very clean. ( Black background behind satin polished cross shafts and bell cranks etc.). This is a real simple process. But first I must cover everything and cradle the guitar body. I use cardboard and garbage bags. This stuff gets on everything. A quick sanding/scuff then, tape off where I do not want flock to stick. Next I use a small brush and apply the glue. The final step is to use this really cool tube filled with flock material and start pumping it out onto the glue. Let it sit overnight. The next day tap and gently blow off the excess.

Getting closer...

Well folks here it is. Standing on it's legs. It's a long way from done however it's all normal stuff from here on in, assembly, rodding ,stringing tuning etc. When it's up and running maybe I will see if I can film it being played so you get some sense of how it sounds. I hope following along has been as much fun for you as it has been for me taking you folks on my journey with this guitar. Maybe we will See you on the next project.

thanks
wayne

working on that this weekend John. Hopefully should have it finished by next week sometime. This is where it becomes a very slow process, setting things up and making sure it all works right. As you know i have another MSA here as well and had to rob a few parts off of it. This guitar will have the complete Emmon's set up on it I hope Including the double lower on the 2nd string. Then it should be ready for you to play it Winking
Thanks
Wayne

Thanks to everyone that has commented or just followed me on this build. I think it turned out quite nice. Your questions and discussions helped me understand and get through some engineering issues that presented themselves through this process. I have another pedal steel build I will be starting this winter that was inspired by these discussions and will introduce it once I am ready to get going on it.
Thanks everyone and we'll see you in the next build.

BTW, I did Jerry's longhorn design. I drew one large one then reduced it using a copier machine.
As you know, he's no longer making steel guitars unfortunately.
Great looking guitar!
Congrats.
