| I've been in the habit of shielding the pickup and control cavities in my rescue lap steels and guitars with a combo platter of adhesive aluminum foil, copper tape, and that nasty graphite paint. I've used single-coil pickups, and have achieved excellent results. Would the same method apply for shielding humbucking pickups, or is it unnecessary overkill? |

The same method applies. Whether it's worth the trouble depends on whether the noise bothers you, all humbuckers are not equally good at cancelling noise. Unshielded wiring runs outside the cavity can also contribute (thinking about the placement of a Tele switch in the cavity, vs. a Les Paul switch on the upper bout, for example, the LP wiring is much longer.) You can replace long runs with shielded wire.

Not a lot to be gained in the pickup cavity since the HB already has a grounded metal baseplate (gibson type HB). Control cavity yes, and shielded wire where possible.

Thank you for your replies, gentlemen.
I currently have five instruments (two Gibson BR-9s, two Kalamazoo KG toilet seat guitars, and a Kalamazoo KB toilet seat bass) that I am in the process of rescuing from dead carcasses. All of them have the pickup(s) and controls in the same cavity. One KG and the KB will receive humbuckers. I reckon that I will keep doing what I have always done, and give the entire cavities three coats of that nasty black shielding paint.

Has anyone like EMG ever made an active (dead quiet) pickup for pedal or lap steels?
