Hi; I have a Goldtone resonator, steel body, round neck, and biscuit bridge. I took it apart and cleaned it, then put it back together. Now the cone is making a booming sound when I play it. Any comments would be helpful.

The cone has a dent near the top, I don't know if it has always been there or not. I never had the cone out before this. I can't get the cone to sit properly. It was fine before I took it apart. Does the cone need to be replaced?

Any suggestions, comments, or follow-up questions are welcome.

Thanks!

Pictures would help, the cone in and out.

Also, make sure that you don't have the biscuit reversed(rotated) (high side/low side).

I don't have a pic of the cone in place. I should have taken one. It's been reassembled now, so I can't take a pic of it in place.

For reference, I have had the cone out of my cheap Rogue resonator twice in the last three days and re-assembled it without issues. Plays fine.

Oh my.

What pickup is that and did it come from Gold Tone that way?

Whatever any other issue is, the cone needs to be replaced. It might well be the issue. The cone could be slightly "cocked" to one side. There's not much that can go wrong with the cone shelf as it is steel.

I can't think of anything but the cone I'm afraid.

Is the dent significant, do you think? If the cone is cocked I can't imagine how it got that way, I was very careful with it and it worked just fine before I took it out. I had trouble getting it seated, but I didn't force it.

Yes, the pickup came that way. At some point it stopped working. I let it go for a long time then decided I would look at it to see what is wrong with it. I couldn't see anything wrong.

Thank you for your helpful response.

John,

Near Toronto?

The folks at 12th Fret know these guitars and could do an "in person" evaluation for you.

Iā€™d start by taking it apart again.
Make sure the biscuit, bridge, cone connection is snug.
Make sure the cone is aligned nice and evenly.
Watch the cover alignment as you reassemble it.
Is the tailpiece slapping against the cover?
Is the cover banging against the guitar body?

And if nothing else works, 12th Fret know resonator guitars as well as just about anyone.

Thanks. I have done this twice, but I think I'll have to do it again, in a much more detailed and repeatable way.
