I have 70s Sierra Olympic which is a heavy guitar and the hard case weighs a lot. I am looking for options to carry the steel around town.

Would a keyboard case be sturdy enough? Are there any lighter weight options available?

I bought a padded Gator 49-key keyboard case for my 2004 MSA Millennium SD-10 and it shaved 22 pounds of the Texas flight case. Works great for hauling around town, and I still have the other in case I would ever need to fly with it (which will be about the time that pigs do the same!).

I have a Gator PG49 keyboard case for my GFI. The case weighs 6 lbs.

I don't know if the Gator case will work for a heavy guitar. If you decide to try one, buy it where they have a liberal return policy in case it won't work.

Thanks, I was not sure whether a keyboard case would hold up or not. Going to give this a try!

If you are referring to the PG49, it does not have wheels.

If you want to go real light, And don't have to assemble and tear down your guitar for near home gigs. Here was my solution to transport a MSA Classic to local gigs for about 15 years. I had a padded bar in some of my vehicles the guitar set against in the back and was Bungie Chorded solid to keep it from moving. On long distance gigs, Made sure I ate my Wheaties for Breakfast, And put it in its case.

The cover is constructed with Marine Grade Naga-Hyde cover, 6 layers of quilt filler and Crushed Velvet for lining. 3 straps holds it secure on the guitar.

Only had 1 problem, Set Steel on stage one night, Went and got something to eat. When I came back a sit-in Bass player was sitting on my steel tuning his bass. He said, I thought it was a padded stage stool". "I Was Not A Happy Camper." But that old MSA tuned up, No worse for wear.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I took my Sierra in its new keyboard bag case out tonight. Big time improvement!

Does the Gator PG 49 case have space for the pedal rack and the leg/rod case too?

Or do you guys put those items in another light case?

(I play a Carter SD 12)

I put them in a separate bag with my D-10s, but with a S-10, I was able to get it all in the gator. I would guess you could get them in with a S-12, but can't say for certain.

3/4" pine verticals capped with 4mm Luan plywood top and bottom is damn light. Hog out some of the pine leaving a hefty frame.
Glue up as a closed box then cut in half. Use blocks of semi rigid foam cut to size inside. I believe it's lighter than the typical chip board even.
It's somewhere between cloth and flight cases regarding weight and protection.

There is a separate pocket that the pedal bar and legs fit.

I was considering a separate bag but the separate compartment works. Pedal bar and legs/rods in bag.

I suppose if you are going for light as you can make it, then a separate case for the pedal bar and legs/rods.
