I have a Black Box that has a 12AX7 tube heading south.

Any favorite brands for a replacement?

Hi, when choosing a tube for the black box I believe you want one that does not have a spiral filament.

For clear and clean, I recommend the Electro Harmonix. They are quiet and have better frequency response than most.

Thank you Gentleman... I maybe should've waited for responses before ordering a Tung-Sol 12AX7... Patience is a virtue I have yet to master Sad

What exactly are the symptoms of a tube going bad? I’m playing through 3 tubes: Black Box(1) and Octal V8 (2)

Steve the Black Box was the only Tube in the chain... single string stuff wasn't bad, but chords especially up the neck had a harmonic zing/sizzle to them. It would twist my ear and make me ask myself, "what in the world am I hearing"?... It wasn't always there, and at times I thought I was imagining it, but it became more prevalent over time.

When I took the Black Box out the chain the Zing was gone. I talked to Brad and he said it was likely a tube... I either misunderstood or was led to believe that the Black Box was new a while before Jan 2021, but after the Zinging and taking it apart saw that it was actually made in 2014. Anyhow, since putting a new Tung Sol Tube in, the Zing is gone.
