Howdy fellers:

Who was the cat who made those excellent Fender-like lap steels? They were darn near as good as a Deluxe; some had a really nice dark walnut finish.

Can't remember his name for the life of me. I wanna same Gary something? But I'm probably wrong.

Saw one of his on Reverb a year or two ago and I wish I'd bought it.

You guys will remember...

PS) Not Hudson, fyi.

Perhaps Gary Rue's Kingpin guitars?

https://garyruesmusic.wixsite.com/kingpinsteels

He offered both a Stringmaster style and a Deluxe 8 style body with a couple different finishes. Nice guy, fine craftsman. Still in business as far as I can tell.

Very cool that he offers the single neck in either Deluxe or Orphan Stringmaster style.

I have become very fond of my own Orphan (made from spare bits.)

Wow, those are beautiful. What does that strange knob near the bridge in between the 3rd and 4th strings do?

Greg; I'm sure that is a "Blend Knob" like the original Stringmasters had under a flip/plate.
So it blends ohms from front pickup to back pickup; back and forth(warmer or higher impede)
Ricky

It might sound nitpicky but I think it's an important distinction - the blend doesn't go from one pickup to the other as you would assume. The pickup nearest the bridge is on all the time and the blend knob adds the other pickup in -so it's really a volume control for the second pickup rather than a "blend". It is wired in such a way that when the second one is fully blended, the pair act as a single humbucker.

Thank you Jeff. That's an interesting concept to blend in a 2nd pickup to make it a humbucker.

I always loved the look of those fender styled lap steels but I always got frustrated when it came time to string the darn things up.

The tuning pans used to frustrate me. So I traded mine - I think for a Dobro at the time. I was really digging Stacy Phillips playing.

Absolutely beautiful looking guitars though. The Kingpin is extremely well designed.

Interesting - I've never had that problem. I've always used a string winder which makes it easier, I think.

I wasn't aware of the Kingpin guitars...they look nice! I was thinking maybe the thought was Hudson kits. If you are looking for something similar eg single neck StringMaster necks and are handy enough to finish it, wire it up, etc., Jimmie Hudson's kits would be a fairly cost effective way to get something similar along these lines (it's also fun to build your own).

On the blend knob...it's clever, I just never took mine off of full. Maybe it was the style of music I play, but I never wanted that guitar to sound any thinner than it already did! Probably good for country or western swing if you wanted extra "cut".

I did end up emailing Gary Rue at Kingpin and he mentioned that he is not currently building. He expects to be operation early next year.
