Hi all, I play music for adults as well as kids. I usually bring a few different instruments to the kids shows (guitar, ukulele, mountain dulcimer, autoharp, etc...) I'd like to add resonator, but I think I could use some real-world examples of folk music being played on a resonator or lap guitar as a solo accompaniment instrument for voice.

I play a resonator in C6 tuning (to match the intervals on my D6/9 pedal steel tuning), and don't play bluegrass dobro style. But I'm interested in anything you might consider good rhythmic playing.

Kelly Joe Phelps comes to mind:

As does Ben Harper:

I was in Carter's Vintage Guitars a few years ago and filmed Johnny Bellar doing Travis picking on a resonator [see video link below]. That style - which would likely take time to develop - may be good for accompanying singing.

I don't think any of the above examples are using C6 tuning. The vast majority of solo accompaniment you hear is done in "open" major tunings or slight variants. I do a lot of this myself, mostly in D tuning. You need two roots on the lower strings to get that alternating bass thumb roll going. Some of the Bluegrass players can get a pretty convincing strum with a thumbpick. It should be possible to do solo accompaniment in C6 but I don't recall hearing anyone doing it. I'd be interested in hearing some examples.

Yes I'd agree with Chase, open tunings are going to work better for solo playing with voice. That is my focus.

Some old delta blues style singing by Black Ace, with a National square neck tricone on his lap:
