I have a National New Yorker lap steel. I'm not sure of it's vintage but it looks like the instrument in this Fretboard Journal article, with the difference that mine is not clean like the one in the photos.

In particular, the tuning machine knobs have been replaced by a moldable green substance. I need to remove that stuff and put proper tuning key knobs on it. The tuning machines are enclosed in branded housing. What's the best way to replace those knobs? I don't have a workbench or vise. Are the housings fragile? Can they be replaced? I would rather keep everything original, but the guitar has had some damage in its rough life already. Usability is my goal.
If anybody has any advice, experience or tips I would appreciate it. It plays beautifully and sounds great, but with the knob material starting to slip I will lose the ability to tune it. Thanks in advance. |
